Chapter Twenty-Five

Reed

“You’re sure?”

“A hundred percent,” Frank said. “I traced the last number she used back to her personal cell phone.”

“She used her personal cell phone?”

“Of course; it’s not like she knew she was being monitored by a detective. She probably thought it was safe to use her number just once. And that’s when I caught her.”

“Now what?”

“Now we submit all our evidence to the police and let them handle the rest.”

“I’ll need detailed summaries of everything you’ve found out about her.”

“No problem,” Frank replied. “I managed to track down three different people she used as messengers for her letters. I put a little pressure on them and threatened them with legal action, and they spilled the beans.”

“What exactly did they admit to?”

“They were just pawns,” Frank said. “Random people who Sofia was using to cover her tracks. She paid them a little money to deliver her letters. None of them had any idea who she was or what was inside the letters.”

“But they’ll testify against her if need be?”

“I don’t even think they’ll need to,” Frank replied. “This will be an open and shut case. Especially given the restraining order you’ve taken out against her. It’s still in play, right?”

“Of course.”

“Then I see no problems going forward.”

“Except the problem of Mr. Burton.”

“Who?”

“Sofia’s father,” I said. “He’s going to want to keep her out of jail again.”

“The only reason you agreed not to press charges the last time was because he promised you he would keep his daughter in line and get her into rehab,” Frank reminded me. “He didn’t keep his end of the bargain, so why should you not be able to press charges this time around?”

“Oh, I’m not considering doing anything but pressing charges,” I said firmly. “I just foresee a problem, that’s all. But I’ll deal with that later. For right now, I’m going to go see the police with this information. Meet you at the station in half an hour?”

“See you there,” Frank said.

I hung up and walked out of my room and into the living room where Jenna and Taylor were playing with Legos on the carpeted floor. Jenna looked up when she saw me and smiled brightly.

“Come on, Daddy,” she said. “We’re going to build a big house.”

“Um, sorry, sweetheart,” I said. “But Daddy has an errand to run.”

“Can’t you do it tomorrow?” Jenna asked.

I paused, but Taylor jumped in. “I’m sure your dad will be as fast as possible,” she said. “We can wait, right, Jenna?”

Jenna sighed and nodded. “Okay,” she said disappointedly.

I exchanged a look with Taylor, but I couldn’t explain to her all the details with Jenna there. So I waved goodbye to both of them and headed out the door. New York City traffic was so bad that by the time I got to the station, Frank had already been there waiting for me for almost an hour. He was in an office room on the second floor of the station with two officers.

“What took you so long?”
