Chapter Twenty-One
Reed
“Hello, Frank?”
“This is Tanya Boarding,” a crisp, feminine voice replied on the other end. “I’m Mr. Shrewry’s personal assistant.”
“Where is Frank?”
“He’s away from his office at the moment,” she replied vaguely.
“I gathered that,” I replied. “I need to speak to him urgently.”
“And you are?”
“Reed Davis,” I replied. “I’m also one of his clients.”
“Oh, of course, Mr. Davis,” Tanya replied. “I’ll let him know you called the minute he returns.”
“He’s not picking up his personal number,” I said. “Which is why I had to call this one.”
“He doesn’t answer his calls when he’s working, sir,” Tanya replied.
I sighed. “Tell him to call me back as soon as he can.”
“Of course, sir.”
I hung up and took a deep breath. I knew it hadn’t been that long since I’d hired Frank, but I had hoped he would have dug up something by now. It wasn’t enough for me to suspect that Sofia was behind the threatening letters and the nuisance calls. I needed proof. I had to be able to provide hard evidence so that not even the best lawyers in town could refute it.
“Reed?”
I looked up and saw that Taylor had stuck her head through my door. “Hey, Jenna and I about to start cooking; you want to join us?”
“Sure.” I nodded distractedly. “I’ll be right there.”
Taylor wrinkled her forehead as she realized that something was on my mind. She looked down the hall for a second and then she walked into the room and stood in front of me.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“I’m fine,” I said.
Taylor gave me a pointed look, and I had to smile. “Okay… so I’m a little preoccupied with a couple of things.”
“Work?” Taylor asked. “Or other stuff?”
“Other stuff,” I admitted.
Taylor sighed and sat down beside me on the bed. She took my hand and placed a kiss on my cheek. I desperately wanted to wrap my arms around her and pull her into the curve of my body, but I knew that it would be hard to stop myself then… and Jenna was in the other room.
“I know this is weighing heavily on your mind,” Taylor said. “But you’ve done something about it. You’ve hired someone who’s going to figure out who’s stalking us.”
“He hasn’t really done much so far.”
“You just hired him,” Taylor pointed out. “Give him some time. Until then, just try to enjoy your life. Worrying isn’t going to speed up the process.”
“I just want to make sure you and Jenna are safe.”
“We are safe,” Taylor said confidently. “We’re with you.”
