“Yes, the building is safe, and we have twenty-four-hour security,” Reed said. “I’m the one who dragged you into this mess, and I want to make sure you’re protected.”
“Okay,” I said, and my throat felt parched. “I’ll come right over.”
“No, I’ll pick you up,” Reed said.
“That’s unnecessary,” I said. “It’s only eight o’clock anyway. The streets and the subway are going to be crowded. I’ll be fine.”
“Still, it’ll make me feel better. Please, let me pick you up,” Reed insisted.
“What about Jenna?”
“It’s only eight, she’s still up, and I’m sure she’d love a little jaunt at this time, anything to postpone her bedtime. I’ll be there in twenty minutes, half an hour tops.”
“Okay,” I replied, feeling shaken, but still a little happy despite the situation.
I hung up and turned to Megan. “Reed suggested I stay over at his place for a while… until we catch this person.”
“I gathered,” Megan said with a pointed smile.
“What?” I asked.
“Every cloud has a silver lining, huh?”
I shook my head at her. “I’m sorry I have to cancel our movie plans.”
“Don’t worry, hon,” Megan said. “Your safety comes first.”
I gave her a hug and then went to my room to start packing. The truth was I was worried. Whoever this stalker was, they clearly wanted me out of the way. And I was willing to bet they were going to do their best to make sure they were successful.
