Chapter Thirty-Nine

Reed

Two Months Later

“Taylor?”

“I’m fine,” she said, and a second later I heard a flush.

“You just threw up,” I said accusingly, the moment she opened the door.

“It was nothing.”

“It was something,” I said. “Maybe the medication they have you on is not agreeing with your body?”

“I highly doubt that’s the reason, Reed,” Taylor said, in a calm voice. “You’re overreacting.”

“Stop telling me that,” I said impatiently. “You’ve just been through this huge incident—”

“Reed!” Taylor said firmly. “It’s fine, okay? I feel much better now.”

“After you threw up?’

“It was just the one time,” she said, as though it meant nothing.

“It’s not just the fact that you threw up,” I argued. “You’ve been really tired lately. You’ve been having headaches, and I noticed yesterday that your feet were a little swollen.”

“Are you saying I’m fat?” Taylor asked, trying to make light of her symptoms.

“That’s not funny.”

“You worry too much,” Taylor said, kissing me on the cheek. “Come on, Jenna will be waiting for us.”

I blocked her way out of the room and shut the door. “You need to take this seriously.”

“Oh, Reed,” Taylor said tiredly.

“You were shot, Taylor,” I said firmly. “I know you want things to get back to normal immediately, but your body needs time to recover… not to mention your mind.”

“I am recovered,” Taylor said stubbornly.

“Then why were you complaining of a headache yesterday.”

“I don’t recall ever mentioning that to you.”

“I heard you on the phone with Megan last night.”

“Urgh, remind me to text her next time.”

“Doctor Smith wanted you to keep him informed about your condition.”

“I don’t have a condition,” Taylor said. “What I have is an overprotective boyfriend.”

“I’m just being careful; I want to make sure nothing happens to you.”

Taylor came forward and wrapped her arms around me. “Have I told you how much I love you lately?”

I smiled. “Nice try,” I said. “I still think we should go and pay Doctor Smith a visit.”
