“I thought I heard something while I was sleeping… something is happening in six months?”
Reed looked confused, and then realization dawned. “Oh… no, no. Nothing is happening in six months. I was just telling Jennifer that I wanted to take time off… for around six months.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Are you sure?”
“About taking time off?” Reed asked. “I am a hundred percent sure… I want to spend more time with you and Jenna. By the way… Jenna knows about us.”
“She does?” I asked.
“She kind of figured out that I was in love with you… she’s a perceptive child.”
“She is.”
“Taylor?”
“Yes?”
“Did you… by any chance hear anything else?” Reed asked.
“Lots of little things,” I said. “I can’t remember now though.”
“Oh… okay.”
“Why do you ask?”
“No reason,” Reed replied quickly. Then he smiled. “I discussed something with Jennifer that I wanted to surprise you with.”
“Really?” I asked. “Sounds intriguing.”
Reed laughed lightly. “I suppose it doesn’t matter either way; I just wanted you to be fully recovered.”
I understood as he spoke what he was referring to. Not because I had overheard it, but because my instincts and his body language gave me all the clues I needed. I suppose I always knew that this would be the inevitable progression to my relationship with Reed. I wondered if I had always known it… from the moment I realized we had a shared past that was too mind-boggling to bejusta coincidence.
Megan was right. It was the universe telling me that I had found my perfect partner. This was what had always been destined for me. My sad childhood had just been preparation for a life of happiness and motherhood with the one man who understood me completely.
“You’re going to ask me to marry you… aren’t you?” I asked.
Reed’s eyes met my own, and he nodded once. “Yes.”
I smiled. “Okay.”
“Okay?” Reed repeated. “What does that ‘okay’ mean?”
“Why don’t you ask me the question now and find out.”
Reed looked around. “Here?”
“Yes.”
“I don’t have a ring.”
“I don’t need a ring,” I said. “I just need you.”
Reed smiled and took my hand. “Taylor… will you marry me?”
It was simple and straightforward and to the point. I smiled at him, and all the pain in my body seemed to float away.
“Yes, Reed,” I said. “I’d love to marry you.”
