I turn to her, and she smiles sweetly, as Sadie always does.

Fear pricks my spine. Does she know?

“If they could only control their tempers,” Gillian says.

Wren goes to the fence line. “Stop beating up Emmett!”

Bennett comes over to the fence and bends down to talk to her.

“I wish I had this on video,” Walker says. “Left my phone in the truck though.”

Gillian puts her foot on his back, pushing him off the bleachers. He stumbles and turns toward her.

“Sorry, I was stretching and didn’t realize you were so close.” She shrugs with a saccharine smile.

In a huff, Walker takes his trophy and leaves.

All three brothers continue to yell and point fingers while the rest of the cousins hover around the backstop, waiting for them to finish.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Emmett

Ben’s tires skid as he hauls ass out of the parking lot.

Jude drives away too.

I’m left on the bleachers with Briar, Wren, and Bennett, holding an ice pack that the Diamond Spurs gave me because my asshole brothers wouldn’t share the first aid kit with me.

“What’s going on with you guys?” Bennett asks, watching Wren drag a stick through the dirt at the bottom of the bleachers.

“We’re fighting.” My head is rocking.

Briar’s keeping her distance, not wanting to give away that we’re a couple, although Bennett pretty much assumes we are from our conversation at The Hidden Cave. Though I never officially confirmed it.

“You’re always fighting about something. Want to talk about it?”

“Not really.” I lean my head down, my eye swelling. “The worst part is Ben taught me how to punch, and I still can’t beat him.”

“I don’t know, his face looked just as bad,” Briar says.

“I hate you.” Wren hops from one foot to the other like a boxer in the ring preparing to fight. “No, I hate you. Pow, pow, pow!” She pretends to throw punches.

“Great, I’ve turned her into Mike Tyson.” The memory of that night at the pig roast that Briar told me about is still itching away at me. “Hey, Danson, was I an asshole in high school?”

He laughs. “You were cocky.”

Briar smiles and nods.

“That’s what the girls loved about me.” I play the part everyone wants me to. Always have. “But was I mean to people? Like, did I talk shit and stuff?”

Danson knew me the best out of anyone. Jude was working the ranch. Ben was busy with football my first two years, then he was off at college. Bennett was like my twin brother. We were inseparable.

“Why do I feel like you’re asking me this for a specific reason?” Bennett frowns.

I glance at Briar.

“I told you I forgive you,” she says.
