He’s wearing a pair of khaki pants, a plaid button-up shirt, and a pair of loafers. His dark hair is tied behind his neck, making him look like a model, rather than the psychopathic killer he is.

“He’s still alive,” Kragen states the obvious. “Seems you’re losing your edge.” His words are no louder than a whisper as he speaks for my ears only.

“What do you want?”

He laughs deeply. “What doIwant? I believe you know the answer to that question already. Don’t bore me with menial conversation. It’s beneath you.”

“Fuck you.”

“If you insist. However, I believe you need a shower to wash the stench of that captain off first. I smell him on andinyou.” He wrinkles his nose in disgust.

“How’d you find me?”

One side of his mouth lifts higher than the other. “I never lost you, my dear. I just let you run for a little bit. I do hope it was fun while it lasted.”

“I won’t go back.”

“I don’t remember offering you a choice.”

“You’re going to have to kill me,” I retort.

In less than a blink of an eye, he’s in front of me. “What would be the fun in that?” He runs a long finger along my cheek. “No, my dear. You’re far too much fun to play with.”

I jerk away, spitting in his eye. “I hate you.”

“I have missed that tongue of yours, but flattery will get you nowhere.” His hand wraps around my throat, and he pushes me against the truck door. “It’s time to go now, Elsbeth Abernathy. It’s time to gohome.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“This feels strangely familiar, doesn’t it?” Long arms wrap around my body, lifting me high into the sky.

SIXTEEN

an entire damn pirate ship

Unlike the lasttime Kragen carried me away, this time I’m fully conscious. We’re flying high in the sky in plain sight to anyone below. His arms are wrapped around me, and his body above mine, holding me tightly to his chest.

“Where are you taking me?” I scream.

“Home,” he answers. “Where you belong.”

“My home isn’t with you.”

His chest vibrates as he laughs at my words. “Your naivety is amusing.” Kragen lands minutes later in front of a black SUV. A man I recognize from the Outer Banks exits with a smile plastered across his face.

“Hello, again,” Jimmy says. He reeks of alcohol, blood, and insanity.

Mustering the largest amount of spit I can, I fling it in his face, hitting him directly in themouth. Jimmy wipes the spit before backhanding me with the same hand. “Bitch,” he mumbles.

Before I can respond, Kragen has the large man backed against the door of the SUV, with the hand that slapped me broken nearly in half. “Who gave you permission to do that?”

“She spit on me, man. Who knows where that whore’s mouth has been.”

Kragen turns into the monster that’s haunted me for centuries. His face contorts into something from a horror movie. Sharp teeth become more pronounced as he transforms from the man he was earlier into the vampire I remember from years ago.

“Don’t touch her again,” he snarls. “Do I make myself clear?” Jimmy struggles against Kragen’s strength. “I’m not asking twice.”

“Yes,” Jimmy answers.
