If it wasn’t for Roan, this truce would have been over the second that sarcastic reply dripped off his tongue. “Tell me what you know, andmaybeI’ll have an answer.”

“Tall blond in a suit wearing a silver mask. Not a whole lot to go on there. The only thing I know is who it rules out — which is you, so calm down, cupcake.”

“It could still be almost anyone.”

“Hence the difficulties. Other than you, did she piss anyone else off?”

“There’s no telling with her.” I turned my attention out the window, watching as we sailed past other vehicles like they weren’t even moving. And Roan saidIwas a reckless driver. “Why don’t you talk to Misha? He was her date.”

“I did. It wasn’t him.”

“How can you be so sure?”

He glanced at me again, a brow lifted in question. “Well, for starters, he just shelled out a pretty penny to get the princess stateside. Why would he turn around and kill her?”

“Because she’s a backstabbing bitch?”

“Ooo. Ouch. What did she do to you?”

“She framed me for a murder her idiot brother did back home. It was a diplomat, so the repercussions were... harsh.” My fist clenched involuntarily until I forced it flat again.

“So whydidn’tyou kill her? You had the perfect opportunity and more than enough motive from the sounds of it.”

“Roan,” I answered glumly. “He doesn’t approve of what I do, so killing someone with him in the other room would be unforgivable. It wasn’t worth the risk.”

Bennett snorted and muttered, “I hear that, mon frère.”

Shifting in my seat, I regarded him as he drove. The black band on his left ring finger came into view as he turned the steering wheel, navigating through the city with ease.

As if he could sense what I was looking at, he straightened his fingers at a stop light and cocked his head. “Love can be a real pain in the ass.” He turned to me, the corner of his mouth tipped up. “But I’d be completely lost without him. He’s my everything.”

Nodding, I turned away from him. I knew the feeling. Intimately. Roan was the one I loved more than life itself and he was the biggest pain of all. How strange that two opposing notions were represented by the same person. But at least it wasn’t unusual, if Bennett was to be believed.

Pulling up in front of my building, Bennett didn’t even bother putting the car in park. He handed me his business card and promised to be available for whatever Roan or I needed.

“Take care of him,” Bennett said as I climbed out.

“Always.” I pocketed his card, hating him a little less than I did an hour ago. As soon as the door closed, I started toward the building, somehow refraining from sprinting inside and up ten flights of stairs.

Knocking at my own door like a beggar, I huffed and shifted my weight from side to side while I waited.

Footsteps approached softly, followed quickly by the turning of locks. Roan yanked the door open and threw himself at me, wrapping his arms around my neck.

“Oh thank God.” He pressed his lips to mine, pulling me against him as hard as he could and practically dragging me into the apartment.

I kicked the door shut behind us, tightening my arms around his waist and kissing him back. We only made it to the kitchen before I grabbed him by the hips and lifted him onto the island.

“I was so worried,” Roan said between kisses.

Peeling his shirt off, I tossed it to the side before doing the same to mine. “I’m fine.”

Threading my fingers through his hair, I cupped the back of his head and pressed my lips to his. He slid his hands over my hips and around to the back, squeezing my ass and pulling me against him.

Angling his head to the side, I kissed and nipped his throat, enjoying each gasp and whine. “You can’t do that to me,” he sighed, his eyelids heavy.

“It’s not like I planned it.” If I was going to pre-plan my arrest, it would have beenbeforethe fantasy movie marathon. I’d rather spend another night with the Irish brawlers than watch one more thing with a dwarf or elf or goblin in it.

“I mean it, Sasha.” He leaned back, holding my face gently. “I don’t know what I’d do if they locked you up for good. Or worse…”
