“Whatever’s going on in that brain of yours.”

“You.”

He cocked his head, his blue eyes so soft and guileless. How the hell could I have ever thought he’d lie to me? I was such an idiot. Roan was everything good and kind and right in the world. What he ever saw in me, I’d never know.

Holding his chin by my thumb and forefinger, I pressed a kiss to his lips. “I’m going to start dinner.”

“Need any help?”

I shook my head and tossed a glance at his laptop. “Finish whatever you’re doing.”

He flashed me one of his brilliant smiles, the one that came so damn effortlessly, and slipped back into his chair. Music notes floated across the screen again, his head bobbing slightly.

How the fuck I ever ended up with him was a divine mystery, but make no mistake about it, I was never letting him go.

ROAN

“Well?”I pushed away from Sasha’s side, where I’d been reclined for the past several hours, and looked at him with as straight of a face as I could muster. His silence could really go one way or the other — either reserved appreciation or silent disdain. “What did you think?”

“You don’t want to know.” He didn’t even look at me as he scooped up the popcorn bowl and retreated to the kitchen.

“Come on!” I grabbed the empty Coke cans and trailed after him. “It’s a classic! Well, a new classic anyway. And there was only one dwarf this time.”

“The whole mission was a giant waste of time. Why didn’t the old man climb on a bird in the beginning and throw the ring into the volcano? Instead, he gives it to the weakest person in the group. It’s illogical.”

“It’s about the journey, not just destroying the ring. And Frodo had the emotional strength to carry out the task. No one else did.”

“I’d rather have physical strength than emotional strength. You didn’t see any of the humans getting caught by a giant spider and almost eaten.”

“We can’t all be badass hitmen, ok? Some of us mere mortals have to rely on our other talents.” I sidled up to him and kissed the underside of his jaw, the stubble rough against my lips. “Did you at least like the music?”

“You and your goddamn music. Is that all you think about?”

“Is there something better?” I feigned an innocent smile.

He gave me a predatory grin before covering my mouth with his, sucking on my bottom lip gently before nipping it.

“Are you ever going to tell me about your nickname?” I blurted out the question before the filter on my mouth could catch it.

He cocked his head. “Sasha?”

“No. The other one. Your street name, or whatever.”

That time, his brows went up. “The Wolf?”

I nodded.

“Are you ever going to tell me how you got those bolt cutters?” he threw back with a smirk.

“You tell me first.”

His head rolled backward with a groan. “It’s a joke. The whole thing. Thereisno meaning.”

“A joke?” I didn’t buy it. “People are literally scared just by your name. That doesn’t sound like a joke to me.”

Rather than respond, he slipped his phone out of his pocket and started typing. Finding whatever he wanted, he handed it to me with a resigned sigh.
