“You can be such a smart ass sometimes.” Grabbing Leander’s hand, I hauled him out of his chair and yanked him toward the door.

“Are you the pot today, or the kettle?” he asked with a chuckle.

As soon as we got to the car, he pushed me up against the side of it, slanting his mouth over mine. I was surprised, more for the fact he was being so openly affectionate in public, but I wasn’t going to stop to point it out.

“How fast is this thing?” he asked, fumbling behind me for the door handle.

“Zero to sixty in four point seven seconds,” I mumbled against his lips right before he pushed me down into the driver’s seat.

“Good.” He licked his lips and shut my car door. As soon as he was in the passenger seat, I put the four hundred fifty-four horses to the test.

We were halfway between Clairsville and Easton when a flash of red in my rearview mirror caught my eye. Squinting at the sudden glare of headlights, I adjusted the mirror, trying to get a better look at the vehicle. It pulled out when we passed, which wouldn’t have been strange were it not for the fact they were speeding to catch up to us. “Check out that car behind us.”

Leander adjusted the side mirror. “Weren’t they at the restaurant earlier?”

“That’s what I thought.” I punched the gas and sped off down the road, turning at the first intersection I came to. At the next intersection, I turned again. A quarter mile later, the goddamn road turned to gravel. It better not fuck up my undercarriage.

“Do you know where you’re going?” Leander asked.

“Not a clue.”

“Turn left up here.”

I did as instructed, looking back the way we came and swearing. Not only was the red car still there, it was catching up. It went from an odd coincidence to bad news, just like that.

Trying to accelerate, the tires ended up throwing more gravel than anything. “Get us the fuck off of these roads!”

“The next road turns to blacktop again. Turn right.”

I whipped the car according to his instruction, keeping an eye on the headlights gaining ground.

As soon as the tires touched smooth pavement, the Maserati surged forward and I let out the breath I’d been holding.

“I think they’re gone,” Leander said, looking behind us.

“Let’s hope—” I yanked the wheel to the right, narrowly avoiding the front end of a black car that screamed into the intersection from my left. “That fucker just tried to T-bone us!”

“This isn’t good, Bennett.” Leander was watching the side mirror, gripping the arm rest on the door. “The red car is back.”

“Get us to the highway and I can lose them.”

The speedometer climbed higher as I sped down the road. Every time the black car tried to pass, I swerved to block them. I was not about to let these assholes box me in.

“Persistent, aren’t they?” Leander mused.

“Who knew date night would be so exciting?”

The red car caught up, meanwhile the black car fell back so they were driving side-by-side. A curve in the road meant I had to slow down or flip. They took the opportunity to lurch forward, the black car to my left and the red car right on my ass.

The railroad crossing up ahead lit up like a beacon in the darkness. The warning bells dinged rhythmically, accompanied by the flashing red lights.

“Hold on,” I said, flooring it.

Leander braced one hand on the dash, staring straight ahead with wide eyes. “Bennett...”

The black car dropped off and fell behind, but the red car was still in pursuit.

The train and I raced for the crossing. It barreled in from the west, while I floored it from the south.
