My heart swelled at the sound of his words, and tears rolled freely. “You have no idea how much that means to hear you say that. Because I feel so weak in this world.”
“Weak?” he scoffed. “Little bird, you are a fighter. You defeated your own mate in battle. Do you know why I didn’t let you fight Conner?”
I shook my head, listening closely.
“Because I feared you might win, and you know what would happen if you did,” he laughed, his eyes glistening with pride.
“What?” I pressed, not wanting him to stop.
“There can only be one beta, so you would have taken his position.”
Now it was my time to laugh but the seriousness in his eyes made me gulp. “But you didn’t want me as your beta?”
“Why would I, when I wanted you as my Luna, my equal?”
Fuck.
My mind went back to the first time I saw him, mesmerized by his strength, the aura that surrounded him.
How he didn’t want me to know he was the Alpha. The lengths he went through to make me feel at home. Forcing his pack to fight without the help of their wolves.
He loved me before he even knew he did. Without any mate bond.
Warmth moved under my skin, tingling across my chest, down my fingertips. My breath caught in the back of my throat when the ice formed on Isaac’s arms.
Resting my hands on his arm, welcoming the coolness of his skin but was followed by a hiss from his lips.
“Joanne, what’s that?”
My eyes widened in shock, seeing the icy layer melt beneath my touch.
“My fire,” Isaac murmured, claiming my lips.

Ihatedthatshewas keeping things from me. It was creating this distance between us. We had to be one, and it seemed we had our own agendas.
I hoped now that it would change. Putting everything out in the open.
Heat tickled my skin, the icy layer slowly melting away. Similar to how she melted the barrier around my heart.
My fire.
My mate.
I knew she was special. The strength she possessed was something I hadn’t seen before and now, with the warmth from the gentle brush of her fingers on my skin, I realized we would be okay.
She would be able to keep herself safe.
The corner of my lip twitched, wanting to see what more she could do, while I wondered what changed that this side of herself showed itself.
Was it because this strange pack that hid around us was hers?
“Where are we going, my Luna?”
