Shrugging my shoulders. “And an even better one when I have a wolf.”

Not waiting for a response, I opened the door. Welcoming that harsh smell and light. This time Conner didn’t stop me, only stayed by my side. A little too close for my liking, but he only did it to protect me and him. As he pointed out multiple times now.

I knew he was joking, I knew he cared about me, but I hated that he feared Isaac so much.

There was this bond between Conner and me because of the pain we had shared. One we will never get rid of.

I might have destroyed the bond between me and Liam, but the remnant of his betrayal still scarred my body and soul.

“Witch,” Conner whispered, nodding toward the desk.

I wondered how he knew. Did she have a peculiar scent, or was it the leather that was braided in her grey hair?

She seemed so kind and sweet. Not as I would picture a witch. Or was that to blame due to the movies we all watched growing up? Imagining that a witch should look like the evil queen of snow white?

She rose from her seat, her eyes drifting to Conner and then to his neck. “He is waiting for you,” she said, her voice holding the same kindness as yesterday.

I silently nodded and went to the same office as yesterday, Conner still close beside me.

“How did you see she was a witch?”

He smiled, leaning closer. “The red leather in her hair and the smell of roses.”

I hummed, grateful it wasn’t the scent of dead roses. God, where my mind somewhere takes me.

My courage was faltering but before I could even think about turning back, Shaffer appeared. “Took you long enough,” he muttered, and stepped aside to lead me into his office.

He ignored Conner’s presence, only giving him a quick disapproving glance, one that disappeared when he noticed the mark on his neck.

“This is not your mate,” Shaffer stated.

“No, he’s not.” I took the seat by his desk, waiting for him to tell me everything I needed to know, as he promised. But sadly, his lips remained sealed.

“Shaffer, did you get permission?”

He hummed and took his seat. “I can’t tell you everything.” His jaw clenched as if he hated that he couldn’t. “Not until you find him yourself.”

“Who?”

His jaw ticked again, and it made me wonder about something that I had experienced myself.

“You can’t tell me?” I asked.

“No.”

“Can’t or won’t?” Conner scoffed, but I already knew the answer.

I thought it was my own mind doing it. Forcing me to hold my tongue every time I wanted to tell Isaac about Mr. Smoke and couldn’t.

They did something to me, forcing me to remain silent about the encounter. I had my suspicions, but this only proved it.

This pack was different in a lot of ways, maybe even stronger. However, that didn’t explain how this once vibrant town had changed into this ghost town. And why would I want to know?

I had had enough of unanswered questions.

My family, the mark, the memories.

“Did they make me forget?”
