“Yes,” Shaffer sighed. “It was for our own protection; they didn’t want you to—” his mouth shut, and a growl rumbled in his chest. “They hid you in plain sight. Even away from us.”

What kind of magic did they use to keep memories from my time here with my family hidden, to what end? And why would my family keep me away from them, especially since we came here every year?

“Why hide me?”

He glared at me, and it didn’t seem he wasn’t allowed to tell me this, but that he chose not to tell.

“They wanted you to have a life before you—”

He slammed his fist on the table, and I flinched back. “Fucking spell,” he growled, rising to his feet.

“What?” I pressed. “Do I have a wolf?” I asked.

His brows knitted; confusion filled his gaze, and he didn’t answer.

“I want to be turned.”

“Joanne,” he warned.

“You told me yourself, if I had a wolf, I wouldn’t be this broken. I would be stronger.”

He shook his head. “Your family didn’t just work for the Night Walkers. They were there for us. Trying to gather intel and they found something and then they were killed. They never told us what they found.”

Hating that he changed the subject, I followed along. “They were killed by my first mate, Liam.”

“You were never his and it was too much of a coincidence. Chance doesn’t exist in this world,” he laughed, his eyes quickly showed his wolf. A red hue that vanished just as quickly.

Never his? I never saw myself as his, but he was still my first mate.

“Why were they gathering intel? For what?”

He sighed, a brow lifted, and I knew he couldn’t answer that.

“Okay, okay,” I mumbled, focusing on the next question. “Blackwood?”

The red hue came back, and anger crashed off him in waves. Conner whimpered behind me, but I remained unaffected.

“Blackwoods and Monroe’s aren’t supposed to be together,” he gritted out, reining back his aura.

“And still, he is my mate.”

He laughed and straightened himself. “Why do you think the mark won’t stick?”

You know that moment when it looks like the entire world is against you, trying to break you. Rip you apart just for the fun of it. Without any goal.

That has been my life since I lost my family—until I met Isaac. He glued me back together but the second his mark wouldn’t stay scarred on my already broken body, I started to crumble again.

And now this man, this pack doctor, tells me it was all because we weren’t supposed to be together. Even though the moon goddess herself made us mates.

The rage, the fury he had seconds ago, poured through my veins, done with others deciding what should happen to my body and soul. Others decide if I should feel pain or happiness or love.

This was my life, and I needed to claim it as my own.

“Even without the mate bond, I would still be with him.” Clenching my fists, trying to control the heat that crawled under my skin, ready to break free.

“It doesn’t matter, you can never be his.”

My actions were faster than I noticed, my body acting on its own when I rose to my feet and my hardened fist connected with his jaw.
