“We have to leave this place,” he mumbled, scanning our surroundings as if something was coming for us.

Isaac told me we were being followed yesterday, but he said it with a hint of amusement in his voice. Excited to catch whoever was tailing us.

But this? This was different.

“No, we are not leaving!” Ripping my arm away from him, I turned back. I didn’t care if he was scared, I trusted Shaffer.

“Joanne, that smell. It is to cover something up,” he growled, and I froze in my tracks.

“Isaac didn’t scent it because he didn’t go inside with you. To keep it all hidden from him, the building must be under some kind of spell.”

Spell?

With a groan, I glanced over my shoulder. There was still so much I didn’t know about this world.

“I have to meet Shaffer today, he knows me, and he knew my parents. I don’t think he would hurt me.”

A heavy sigh of defeat came from Conner, and he moved beside me. “Just promise me you won’t get yourself killed.”

“I promise.” I gave him a gentle push.

“And I want to stay alive,” he laughed, shoving me back. Just enough to make me stumble slightly. With his kind and caring nature, I forgot how strong he was.

He has a wolf, remember? My own thoughts taunted me.

“I won’t let them kill you.” I smiled, resuming our way back.

“I wasn’t talking about them, but Isaac.”

Pulling my lips behind my teeth, knowing all too well, Isaac was going to be angry with Conner but was sure he wouldn’t truly harm him.

Raking his fingers through his hair. “Just tell m—"

Quickly cutting him off. “I want to be turned.”

“Joanne,” Conner gasped, “are you insane?”

He reached for my arm again, but I stepped away and shook my head. “I made up my mind, Conner.”

“Fucking hell, Joanne. You could die and then I’d die..”

Giving him a pointed look, “he won’t kill you. He loves you, Conner. You are family to him.”

He scoffed. “I don’t think you could call that love.”

“Well, you are the only one he trusts. And he wouldn’t leave you or hurt you. Not really. Yes, he might kick your ass, but he would never truly harm you.”

“He never listens.”

“How can he listen if you don’t speak up?”

His lips parted and closed more times than I could count, and I smiled in victory.

“I’m not an Alpha.” He finally said when we reached the building again.

With my hand on the doorknob. “True, but he wants you to say what’s on your mind. He wants to know your opinion. More than he wants to hear William’s.”

The corner of his lip twitched, and it seemed he fought back the smile that wanted to curl on his lips. “You will make a great Luna.”
