“She’s tough like her momma. Nothing’s going to happen to her.”

“Why are you looking at me like that?” A pink hue spread across her cheeks, and she started to fidget.

I didn’t know how to make her understand how grateful I was. Swallowing the lump in my throat, I said, “Never thought about babies or pregnancies before. I’m truly fucking humbled is all. The way you’re able to nourish and protect our daughter.”

Her lips turned up on the end as her face softened. She got it.

“Finish eating, babe.” Not needing to be told twice, P picked up her fork and dug into her stack of pancakes with vigor.

Guess my girls were hungry.

Chapter Four

PAISLEY

Istared out the window as Crow drove us across town to our doctor’s appointment. A lot had happened in the last twenty-four hours, and I wasn’t sure what that meant for the future.

For as long as I could remember, I’d loved him. We had history, and I’d always felt a pull towards him. Not to mention, I wanted a family for my little girl. That was something neither Crow nor I had when we were kids.

If he wanted to stick around and help ensure our daughter had both of us in her life, I was all in.

“You ready?” I glanced up, surprised we were already there.

“Yeah.”

Crow climbed out and rushed around to my door. He’d been attentive, catering to anything I needed ever since he’d shown up on my doorstep.

It was nice, but it was a side of him I wasn’t used to being on the receiving end of.

“Careful, baby,” he said, grabbing hold of my hand. Butterflies fluttered in my chest as I slid out of his truck. The endearment would take getting used to as well.

“Thanks.”

“Gotta take care of my girls.”

His girls. God, I hope he meant that.

The waiting room was quiet when we walked in. I wasn’t complaining. Hopefully, we’d be able to get in and out without having to wait a long time. There’d been a few instances when my doctor had been called into the hospital for a delivery and his office appointments were pushed back.

“I’ll check in if you want to find us a seat.” Crow headed for the corner as I moved to the window to fill out the sign-in form.

After checking in, I took a seat next to Crow. “Are you nervous?” I asked.

His head cocked to the side. “No, why?”

I pointed to his bouncing leg.

His face broke out into a big smile as he admitted, “I’m excited. Do you think we’ll get to see her on the thing today?”

Thing today. It was cute that he was excited.

“Yes, we’ll get to see her on theultrasound,” I giggled. “Hopefully she’ll cooperate this time. The first time, she kept covering her face and her legs were crossed.”

“Because she’s going to be a classy lady like her momma,” he insisted.

“I—”

“Paisley King?” We both turned to find a nurse waiting to take us back.
