“Don’t fucking touch me.” She looked at me with disgust and my stomach dropped. How had we gotten here? “Stay away from me,Crow. Understand.”

I stood there in shock as a single question played on repeat in my head.

What the fuck just happened?

Chapter Seven

PAISLEY

Two days later

It’d been two days since I stormed out on Crow, and I was miserable.

I thought we were building something real. Something we could give our daughter that we never had. A real family. But you can’t build a life together when there are still secrets between you.

I dropped my hand to my belly as I looked around the bare nursery. “I’m so sorry.”

After our fight, I’d come back to my apartment and when I stepped through the door, it hit me how much the place didn’t feel like home anymore.

I couldn’t dwell on that, though. I had a lot to do. Like putting a nursery together for Violet. But first I had to find some clothes that fit. All my things I’d left behind, and I wasn’t ready to see Crow yet to get them back.

The sound of someone knocking at the door sends all thoughts of my to-do list scattering.

Looking through the peephole, I was surprised to find Layla standing on my doorstep. I didn’t really want to see anyone, but when I saw my pink travel bag in her hand, I flipped the locks, pulled open the door, and went straight for my bag. “Oh, thank the Gods.” Spinning around, I went straight for my room. I’d been wearing a romper two sizes too small and couldn’t wait to get into something more comfortable.

“It’s nice to see you too,” Layla deadpanned, coming inside and closing the door behind her. It wasn’t that I wasn’t happy to see her, but with two weeks until my due date, all I wanted was some comfortable clothes, snacks, and naps. I was growing a human being inside me, for crying out loud. A girl deserved to be comfy.

“Oh yes,” I groaned after pulling on an oversized tee and buttery soft leggings. “I really owe you one,” I said, waddling back into the living room where I found Layla kicked back on my sofa.

“It wasn’t me.”

Nathan.

I should have known. The two weeks we spent together, he went out of his way to make sure I was comfortable.

“How is he?” He hurt me, but I still cared.

Her shoulders shrugged. “A bit of a mess. That’s why I brought you the bag.” She motioned down the hall.

Well, that was clear as mud. I didn’t have a clue what the heck she was getting at. She must have realized by the look on my face. “He’s been driving us all crazy whining about not knowinghow you were. So, I told him I’d come and see, which somehow morphed into him packing that bag.”

My belly fluttered, some of the anger I’d been feeling slipping away. Even when he messed up — royally — he was still trying to take care of me.

“Are you going to forgive him any time soon?” My shoulders fell. I didn’t know what to do.

“He should have told me the truth, but he didn’t. He lied to me.”

Layla lifted a perfectly arched brow. “And what about you and Crow being the daddy of baby V, huh?” I shrunk back, the truth of my own screw up like a smack to the face.

“That’s different. I was scared and—” Layla popped her brow again and my mouth slammed shut. I thought about the look on Crow’s face before I walked out on him days ago. The fear in his eyes. I didn’t even give him a chance to explain. God, I was such a bitch. He’d forgiven me without any hassle even though I hadn’t deserved his mercy.

“Oh, God.” I dropped my face into my hands. What had I done?

“I can see my work here is done.” I looked up when I felt the couch shift.

“Do you know where he is? I have to fix things.”

With a smirk on her face, Layla went to the door and opened it. Crow was standing on the other side with his hands shoved in his pockets and he looked awful.
