CHAPTER FIFTEEN

ETHAN

Ethan stood in the shadows, watching as everything unfolded. He loved to see the emotions flash across Margery’s face.

Relief.

Happiness.

Shock.

Terror.

It sang to his heart as she backed into the wall, not believing what she was seeing.

“Not happening. This is not happening,” she mumbled to herself.

Ethan had put microphones and cameras in her house. He wanted to know what her every move. He needed to make sure she didn’t try anything that could harm her. If something happened to Margery that he could have prevented, he would never be able to forgive himself.

Through the camera, he saw her stare at the stuffed zebra. Ever since he had faked his own death,he had kept an eye on her. He knew there would be a time when she would be his again. Sadly, it had taken eighteen years, but sometimes, the longer a person waited, the sweeter the prize was.

He was going to make good on his promise about marrying her.

“I’m seeing things. I am seeing things. This isn’t real. I’m okay. There isn’t a stuffed zebra on my bed. I must be hallucinating, or it must be the mild concussion I have,” she started to say again.

He loved to see her so frazzled. So uncertain about everything that was happening. Was it real or was it not real? She was and had been, trying to convince herself that she was hallucinating. Soon enough, she would realize she wasn’t, and he was going to enjoy every second of it.

Seeing all of the emotions cross her face was music to his ears. But most of all, he couldn’t wait to get her and keep her.

“This can’t be real, but it looks so real,” Margery mumbled.

Ethan had placed over one hundred small microphones and cameras around her house. He wanted to hear and see everything that happened.

Was it an invasion of privacy? Yes, but he didn’t mind. Margery was his, and he would go to any lengths to check on her.

He watched through the feed as she pushed herself off the wall and slowly walked over toward her bed. It was almost as if she thought the zebra was going to bite her. Sadly, it wasn’t, but he would if she asked him to.

She looked over toward the window and relaxed a little. He loved her having a false sense of safety from a small thing. But if only she knew he was still watching her. What would her reaction be then? She would probably scream, back into a corner, and mumble to herself. Kind of like she was doing right now.

Margery bent and picked up the zebra. “This is real,” she whispered. “So real.”

She placed it on the ground before picking up the note he had left her. Staring at it for several seconds, she was no doubt wondering why he had finally left a note and not just a word embroidered on the zebra’s heart.

Ethan loved to be unpredictable, keeping his victims in the unknown, on their toes. But Margery wasn’t a victim in his mind. She was the love of his life; someone he was going to spend the rest of his time on earth with. He was having fun with her first before he took her.

Ethan wanted to keep her after he killed the man, but he couldn’t. So many unplanned things were happening, and he couldn’t commit to being right next to her. His sister had gone missing, and he was doing everything he could to try and find her.

On top of that, he received a message from his enemy, Rogan, saying he wanted to talk. There was no way in hell he was going to speak to him.

Margery whimpered, and his focus went back onto his screen. Her face was pale as she read the note he left her. Now, she was going to be on alert, trying to see if she could find him. This brought him joy because she wouldn’t be able to locate him unless he wanted her to.

“Soon,” he whispered as he walked off.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

MARGERY

Several days had passed since she got back to New York City. The day before, she had borrowed money from Adalisa and bought a phone. From there, she was able to cancel and reissue new credit cards. She wouldn’t have anything for several days, but she was going to have to live with the fact that there was nothing she could do.
