“I’m not going to give you rules,Lowey, I’m giving him rules. Something’s off about him. I don’t trust him.”

“There’s nothing wrong with Scott. You’re being a jealous, possessive barbarian.”

“You like jealous, possessive barbarians.” Rhett’s winner’s smile takes over his face and my foolish heart pitter-patters. That’s going to be a problem.

He pulls out into traffic just as the rain stops. I expect him to turn toward the Southlands—where Merc’s house is—but he turns off onto the bridge for downtown.

“I want to go home, Rhett.”

“We need to talk in private.”

“I—”

“Please allow me some quiet. You make it hard for me to think clearly.”

That pisses me off.A lot.Clenching my fists, I consider punching the dash, but all I’ll hurt is my hand. I’m curious about his apartment, though. I haven’t been to it yet. I can’t help remembering what I wanted to do with him at his apartment after the charity auction before he pissed me off so much that I changed my mind.

“Have you had Jack in your apartment?” I say, ignoring his request for silence.

“Jack was over last week. I’m sure he told you.”

“That’s not the ‘had’ I mean.” Has he fucked Jack in that apartment? Because if he has, he’s moving apartments.

“Jealous?” He smiles because he already knows the answer.

“Answer the fucking question.”

“No. It’s a new apartment. I moved into it after Jack.”

“Acceptable.”

He’s way downtown, near the water. I don’t want to know how much this place cost him. We park underground, but he takes me up through the lobby. “I want you to meet the door staff. You’re on the list, but them knowing you helps.”

I want to retort that I won’t be coming here on my own, maybe not ever again with him after today. The list of things he has to make up for is too long. He hasn’t even begun to redeem himself. I don’t know why I’m still expecting him to at this point.

I meet Tom the doorman and then we carry on to the penthouse—of course, he lives in the penthouse.

Rhett’s condo is a stunning piece of art. The kitchen is to the right as soon as we walk in, with state-of-the-art appliances. The living room is just off from the kitchen, only partitioned by the long wide counter. All the furniture is black and modern. One wall is entirely glass with the most breathtaking view of the ocean I’ve ever seen. There’s a balcony and a hot tub outside.

He heads straight to the thermostat to turn up the heat. “I’m okay, Rhett. Scott’s not going to pop out of nowhere with a jacket.” I smirk.

“That was not amusing.”

“I dunno, I was pretty amused.” Now that we’re alone, I can read the nervousness peeling off Rhett. It’s uncharacteristic for the man. I break and give him a little smile.

He relaxes and tugs me over to the couch where we sit facing each other. He slings one of his large arms over the couch cushion. “I know I’ve been acting a bit crazy, but it’s because—at least I think it’s because—my love for Jack suddenly shifted. It jarred the hell out of me.”

Not what I expected him to say, but I appreciate his honesty.

“It doesn’t excuse my behavior toward you, but I hope it accounts for the reason I was and still am not myself in an effort to bring you some modicum of comfort.”

“Okay.” I twist my hands in my lap and my gut hollows. Did I really want him to tell me that his love for Jack shifted because of me?

Yeah, kinda.

And he’s not.

“You’re disappointed.”
