From the living room, pounding feet announce the arrival of a horde. Logan’s leading that horde, wearing a paper crown with craft jewels glued onto it. Loud squeals peal from Lorelei and Theo as they rush after him. He sweeps around the smaller kitchen table with ice-dancing grace, dives under the longer dining-room-style table that sits closer to the living room and climbs out the other side.

“You’ll never take me alive!” he shouts.

“Aaaaaaaaaaah!” they scream after him.

As Logan beelines for the living room, I step in front of him, leaving no time for a change in course. Trapping him in my arms feels too good. My cock starts to fill, and I steal an inhale of his summer scent.

“I’ve got him. Is this the evil king you’ve been looking for?” I ask the children.

“Yep! Get him, Lory,” Theo shouts as he barrels forth and whacks at him with a foam bat. Tiny and wispy Lorelei goes at him like a demon. I let him sink to the ground so he can cover himself from the munchkin assault.

“Not fair, not fair! You never would have been able to defeat me if it weren’t for that hideous beast.”

He grabs them, tickling them and disarming them, finally collapsing on his back to catch his breath.

“We want to do that again,” Theo says. “Rhett, will you be the giant beast in our game?”

Not sure that’s a good idea. With the way my cock is responding to the evil king, he might be able to mind-control the giant beast.

Logan removes his crown. “I need a break, kiddos. Here, go crown Merc as evil king for an hour until I return to claim my title.”

“Yaaaaaaah!” Theo snatches the paper crown and races up the stairs.

Logan bursts into a fit of laughter from where he is on the ground, and I raise a brow.

“Jack and Merc are trying to do it while the baby sleeps. I just sent them two cock blockers.”

Reaching for his hand, I peel him off the floor.

“What are you doing here, gorilla? I thought you had a mystery appointment.”

“I did, but now it’s over.” I didn’t specify the appointment because I was picking up the thing in my jacket and I wanted to surprise him. “Here.”

Pulling the box out, I hand it to him. There’s an old clock on the mantle, ticking away the seconds as he stares at what I’ve given him. “Is this the thing?”

“It won’t bite. Open it and find out.”

He nods and he’s hesitant, but he eventually opens the latch to the black box. Inside, the black diamonds glitter under the muted light coming off the clouds from beyond the windowpane. Even the dreariness of the day can’t mute their incandescence. The chain appears delicate—it’s thin rather than thick—but it’s titanium so it’s strong. Delicate and strong, the same kind of contradiction that he is.

“Each one is a half-carat,” I explain as I remove the necklace from the box.

“This isn’t a bracelet.”

“I’m glad your eyes still work.”

“Not funny, Rhett. Why are you doing this? It’s way too fucking much.”

“So that Father will take us seriously. He’s not buying us at all. We need this boost.”

“And you think a necklace rather than a bracelet will do the trick? Shouldn’t it be the same as you got for Jack?”

“May I?” I ask, ignoring his questions. I’ve been dying to see it on him.

He inclines his head and then nods. “Sure, baby.” He winces. “Fuck, I mean … can we forget I called you that?”

His cheeks tint a gorgeous shade of pink and his bottom lip pouts, begging to be sucked into my mouth.

“I can forget all about it, for the right price.” That’s a lie. I can’t seem to stop thinking about the times he calls me baby, especially when there’s no one around to put on a show for.
