Our food arrives and he doesn’t pick at it like he usually does. He eats with real zest, and my insides relax. I nearly fall out of my seat when he allows the server to pour him a second glass of champagne. He’s not of legal drinking age here, but he’s with me so the server didn’t ID him.

“Happy?”

“Really fucking happy. I’m even considering letting you off the hook for flirting with Tabby to get me into husbands and wives hockey club.”

I haven’t forgotten about what he threatened me with. “It’s for the benefit of whoever you decide to flirt with. I’m sure they won’t like being relocated to the moon at all.”

He laughs, but I’m serious. “I won’t do it tonight. This is special. I’m only yours tonight.”

“You’re only mine every night,” I huff. “I’d feel a lot better if we took a quick little trip to Vegas.”

“Vegas? You want a Vegas wedding?”

“No, dear. Our wedding will be the event of the century, but I want the piece of paper that says you’re mine. We’ll get married immediately and plan a wedding for much later.”

“Good grief, Rhett. I’m going to need more champagne for this conversation,” he says, filling up his own glass. “Do I need to sic Merc after you? Because I will.”

I’ll get him to loosen up on the timeline for that, but probably not tonight. “What kind of a wedding do you want?” I ask him.

“Never thought about my wedding, gorilla. Never thought I’d get married.”

“Why would you think that?” When he says things like that, I’m reminded that there’s more for me to get to know. The hard things that aren’t fun to talk about while you’re falling in love.

He reaches for my hand. “I wasn’t kidding when I said I don’t have friends, Rhett. People don’t stick with me. And Mom’s relationships never worked out, so I never saw the point. Ugh, all of that’s pathetic. Don’t leave me for being pathetic.”

Logan gazes at the empty spaces between his cutlery. I’m going to murder everyone who ever hurt him. Unexpectedly, his lips turn up at the corners.

“What are you smiling about?” I ask.

His eyes snap to me. “I can feel your rage about that, burning at me from across the table. You’re totally smitten with me, aren’t you?”

“We’ve established that.” I won’t deny it. I’ll spend every minute of our lives making sure he knows he’s worshiped.

A pretty blush creeps across his neck, well above the line of his dress. I can’t wait to peel that dress from his body.

Dinner ends, and I make plans to whisk him up to my apartment. “Stay the night.” I know he’s got the ridiculous first-year curfew, but I feel confident in my abilities to get him out of any trouble if he skips it.

“Rhett.”

“Please?”

He tilts his head. There’s no one else on the planet I’d beg for, and he knows it. “I’m gonna be in so much shit with my brother. Jack’s a rat and tells him everything.”

That’s probably good for Jack’s ass. “I’m leaving tomorrow, surely he can understand that.”

“Fine, you win. I’m gonna miss you so damn much, it’s starting to physically hurt. This is bad. Unhealthy.”

“It’s perfect.”

Chapter31

Anxious Kitten

Logan

My phone chirps like a rabid hockey fan. Dusting the sleep from my eyes, I pry myself from the luscious warmth of Rhett. I hollowed out a cave in his arms and nestled there all night.

Goddammit. My brother. He couldn’t have waited until the sun came up to lecture me?
