Percy stands up straighter, like my announcement just lit a fire under his ass.

“Does he have the resources to help? I got the impression they did all they could, but the lack of any evidence made it difficult.”

While he was gone, Gwen confided that he’d offered to get a private detective involved to try to get her some answers, but she turned him down. She just wanted to get on with her life, understandably. What I heard between the lines was that she’d given up, resigned to be swept under the rug of the legal system. Being a minority in this country sucks, and was one of the reasons I chose the major I did.

“He’ll do it for me.”

“I want to meet him,” he says. “Can you make that happen?”

“Sure. Just say where and when.” I pull out my phone and look between the two of them, poised to text my brother Ambrose.

“Is he available tonight?” Gwen asks. “We can meet at my house.”

“You sure that’s a good idea?” Percy asks. The pair lock eyes for a moment, then look at me.

I raise my eyebrows. “I don’t have to come. I don’t know what’s going on here—” I wave between the three of us “—but I’m not about to do anything to jeopardize it.”

“There’s nothing to jeopardize,” Percy says.

He’s so emphatic, I laugh. “Seriously? You were there.Bothtimes, I might add. And don’t tell me this isn’t some heavy flirting.” I reach into the bag he brought back and pull out the shirt, holding it up. He scowls. I turn it so Gwen can see what the dick pulledagain.

Gwen covers her face with her hands. “Oh, Percy,” she says through a laugh.

I pull the shirt over my head and stand, then close the distance so I’m looking him square in the eyes. My pulse speeds up at the proximity, because I’m about to do somethingreallyoutside my comfort zone to make a point.

He doesn’t budge, but stares me down, a muscle spasming in his jaw. In a low voice, I say, “I get it. She’s important to you. She’s becoming important to me too. But if you think you’re going to scare me away with your gay, challenge fucking accepted.”

Then I reach up, grab the back of his neck with both hands, and crush my mouth against his before he can react. His surprise is evident from the way he stiffens, but I hold tight, tilting my head to get a deeper lock.

Kissing is something I’m good at, but I’ve never done it with another man before. But he doesn’t resist. Instead he groans and slides one arm around my waist, clamps the other hand at the back of my neck, and closes the minuscule distance between us until our chests are pressed together. Then his tongue darts out and answers my challenge with one of his own, daring me to go deeper. I’m not about to let him win, so I deepen the kiss, our tongues dueling for dominance.

Like a frog in boiling water, I’m not even aware of what’s happening to the rest of my body until it’s too late, but it’s my fault—I jumped into this fucking pot, after all. I even turned on the heat. He tilts his hips, and the hot ridge of his erection grazes mine. Because I’m fucking hard as a rock too. That’s when I pull away with a gasp and stare down.

“Holy fuck.”

Percy laughs, his fingers still clamped at the back of my neck. “For the record, I’m bi, not gay. And it looks like you might be too.” Then he looks at Gwen. “He can come. But only if he agrees to spend the night.” Looking back at me, he adds, “Because you started something, and I’ll be damned if I don’t make you finish it.”

When I pull away with a chuckle, I’m about to suggest we slow down, but Gwen’s shocked expression makes me hold my tongue. She’s staring at Percy like he’s insane. Did she really not know his orientation? She was the one who asked him to suck my dick.

“How…?” she asks, glancing at the tent in his trousers.

He grimaces. “You have to admit, he is kind of lovable. I’m not a machine.”

Confused about the exchange, I clear my throat. “It’s totally true, but I don’t get why you’re surprised.”

“She’s surprised because it takes a lot to make me hard. Don’t let it go to your fucking head, okay?”

“That’s an oversimplification,” Gwen says, but clamps her mouth shut at Percy’s warning glare. She smiles. “Fine, you can deny all you want, but you can’t hide the truth from me.”

“Fuck, you guys are talking in riddles now. I have to go. I have a cubicle at the library reserved to work on my thesis. I need to get going if I’m going to be stuck with the two of you all night.”

I stuff my soiled shirt into my backpack, then remember my abandoned text to my brother. I add the meeting details and hit send, then press Gwen and Percy for their numbers.

The tension of my undertaking weighs on me all the way to the library. It’s unlike me to get this distracted from my academic obligations, but I’ve always been good at multi-tasking and compartmentalizing. Except now it’s a bigger challenge than usual, because my mind is still spinning about the revelation Percy laid on me.

Ididinitiate that kiss, but it was more a challenge to his need to fuck with me. I knew I was right, but I didn’t have to fuckingkiss himto prove it. So what does that say about me?
