“Yes, you can.”

Autumn turns her head to the side.

“We both saw that inside, right? We both know she doesn’t actually want me to be there.”

“So? I’ll be there. We can drink and snack and hide in the storage room, away from everyone.” I want her to look at me. “I might have to socialize a little, but it'll be more bearable if you’re with me.”

She hums in response. “We could get drunk in any storage closet.”

“Sometimes you have to get drunk in a mandatory storage closet to enjoy all of the optional ones. Once this is over with, it’s your pick.”

I am ecstatic to hear the laugh that flies past her lips.

“I just… I don’t know. It’s hard for me to walk into a room where I know I’m not wanted.”

She finally meets my eyes, and I try my best to convey how much I mean my next words.

“You’re wanted in every room I’m in.”

She almost looks like she believes it.

She will, I’ll get her there. Whatever it takes.

Autumn

The days fly by. I focus on writing and work. I fail at any attempt to get Miles off my mind, or to stop stressing over my interactions with Amelia. I haven't received any of the harsh reactions I got from her that day at the office, but I'm always on alert. I'm always waiting for the next one.

I hate the way I made Miles feel, so I've been trying to make up for it. I've been pretending I'm not struggling with our close friendship. I might even fool someone with an outside look in, they would think we're just two besties. No romantic or sexual tension here, no sir.

But there'ssomuch of it on my end.

As a single woman, pretending the way I am, I'm grateful for vibrating toys.

I really don’t know what I would do without them sometimes, but today it feels like I don’t know what to dowiththem. Nothing is enough fuel for this fire I’m trying to start. Not even the smutty book on my nightstand is doing the trick.

My racing mind knows exactly why I'm struggling, and it feels like an internal tug-of-war to keep avoiding it. The last thing I need is for my body to react to him more than it already does.

A knock on my front door interrupts my hopeless attempts. I sigh and stop what I'm doing. Not that there was much going on for someone to interrupt, but I'm still annoyed they showed up unannounced.

The knock happens again, sounding like someone with a purpose. I groan as I pull my favorite vibrator away, switch it off, and toss it on top of my comforter.

I guess we’ll just have to try again later.

I pull my pajama pants on as I exit my room and make my way to peer through the peephole in my front door.

“Sorry!” I say, pulling it open. “What are you doing here?”

I should've known it was him.

Miles gives me a shy smile.

“I can’t find my wallet. I think I might have left it here the other night.”

A laugh bursts out of me as I let him inside.

“You’ve been driving without a license all week? You’re so bad.” I start helping him search, pulling pillows off my couch and feeling in between the cushions. I haven’t seen it anywhere, so I assume if it’s here that it’s got to be in some random, hidden place.
