Page 54 of Years Between You

“I have a confession,” she says once I’ve gotten all the fun details out of my system.

That’s always scary. I narrow my eyes at her.

“I may have posted a video recommending your book, and my thousands of followers may have blown it up a bit.” The smile on her face as she finishes speaking is sneaky. Pleased.

“I— You have thousands of followers?” For how chatty this girl is, you think she might have mentioned it before. “How many thousands?”

“Ninety.” She lifts a shoulder like it’s not a big deal. “I just talk about things I like. A couple years ago I did a makeup tutorial that went viral. There were articles about it everywhere.”

Not one ounce of surprise fills me at that, her personality tends to pull people in.

“What does ‘blown up’ mean to you?” I ask skeptically.

She pulls out her phone and opens up an app I’ve never heard of, something about a clock? Yet another factor in my failure of a debut, I’m sure.

The wind completely knocks out of me when she shows me the screen and one number stands out among the rest of what I’m looking at.Two million views, sitting on top of a thumbnail where she’s holding up my book.

My book.

“How? What? I don’t…” Full sentences are too much for me to handle right now.

The smile on her face grows.

“Isn’t that amazing? I have the best followers.” I take in her appearance, and she looks genuinely happy for me. It’s a lot to wrap my head around.

“Wow,” I breathe.

“Do you want to see it?”

“I don’t know,” I say.

Then I grab the phone from her before I can think better of it, and play the fifteen second video.

I blink a couple times when it restarts and I hit pause. It was so short. So simple. She barely touches on the plot. She didn’t mention knowing me personally. She didn’t even say it was a five star book, she just asked for their thoughts on it.

I decide to look through a few of the comments, although I’m nervous about what I’ll find.

How’d you know I needed a new book rec???

omg this looks adorable!

People just trust her opinion. Just like that.

Kaitlyn looks at me expectantly.

“What do you think?”

“I think I love you.”

After an exhilarating conversation, where I admit my social media flaws to my coworker, she agrees to help me out. She wants nothing in return but signed copies ofevery book I ever publish.

I’m on cloud nine.

“I am ready for this thing to be done,” I grumble, attempting conversation. The office is quiet with the other two out at an appointment. While things have been good between Autumn and I, the tension is noticeably thicker. I’d rather be talking than letting my imagination run wild with it.
