“It’s okay. I can’t expect everyone to put as much effort into these things as I do.”

I guess I have something to do while I’m not writing. I could clean this place up, get it decorated.

“Do I get to know whatyourcostume is?”

“How would that be fair? Absolutely not.”

He laughs, and I hear Freddy whimper in the background.

“You better put me on speaker. I don’t want him to feel left out.”

“He’s never left out. We’re playing fetch as we speak, he just hates when it takes me more than two seconds to throw the ball.”

I look down at my cat who looks perfectly content in my lap. Eyes almost closed, but not quite. Paws crossed. It’s like she wants me to see how much she enjoys his voice. Enjoys him.

I’m still projecting, probably.

We chat for a couple more minutes, keeping the conversation light. No one mentions the kiss, or does any flirting, and I don’t know how to feel. Relieved that I don’t have to pull my thoughts together after my conversation with Amelia? Disappointed that I don’t know how he’s feeling?

I really shouldn't want to know.

I walk into the brightly lit office, and almost stop in my tracks when I see Miles instead of Amelia sitting at the large desk. He doesn’t notice me right away while he studies the computer screen. His fingers fly across the keyboard impressively fast and I hate that I find it attractive. I hate that I find everything he does attractive.

Only when I place my bag on my desk does he stop and look up at me. I try not to melt on the other end of his smile, it’s a relief that he looks pleased to see me.

“Good morning, Autumn.”

Again, not A.

“Good morning, Miles. What brings you to the boss's chair?”

“She has a cold. Wrote me a list of things I could do to help out today. There’s a list for you, too. On your keyboard.”

Sure enough I pull it out and there’s a small list printed out on her fancy, lavender letterhead paper.

“You offered to come in? On your day off?” As if he’s not always working his ass off, it’s a wonder how he looks so well rested all the time. I can’t say I’d do the same in his position, I appreciate my downtime.

Although, most of my downtime is still filled with work. I guess it doesn’t really count.

“A couple hours won’t kill me. Unless you take longer than that, we can head out whenever we’re done.” He’s got his signature smirk on.

The next hour is spent in silence, and I check off my tasks faster than anticipated. Responding to emails, scheduling appointments, scanning some paperwork. The phone doesn’t ring at all, so I’d say Amelia picked a good time to be out sick.

I’m overly aware of the other person in the room while I work. It makes it hard to think clearly about what to do with him. I have no clue what to say and how to say it. I spend the hour changing my mind on every single thought that crosses through it.

“Well, I guess I’m done,” I tell him as I log off my computer and start to collect my things. It takes a handful of seconds before I’m standing and ready to go home. Considering I’ve had no luck figuring out how to approach a conversation with Miles, I don’t think I’ll try.

I know I’ll regret it when he doesn’t text me later. Things haven’t really gone back to normal. The other night on the phone was a fluke.

I hate how much it upsets me. I don’t like going from one-hundred to one the way we have. I let myself get used to it. I let myself get attached.

He speaks before I start to walk away.

“I can be done. I just have to finish up this email.” He points down at his keyboard. “Do you want to grab lunch?”

The breath of relief that flies out of me is too loud to ignore, but he graciously does.

“Yeah, I could eat.”
