How did someone get up to the apartment door? Did I forget to lock up the shop last night?

Knock, knock, knock.

Louder now, more insistent. I tiptoe out of bed and quietly grab a pan from the drying rack. Worst case, I’ll smash the intruder’s face in.

I unlock the door, cracking it open the tiniest bit, so I can get a sliver of a glimpse at the intruder.

“Hey.”

My chest constricts and I can’t breathe, can’t think. One hand’s frozen on the knob, the other arm lifted above my head holding the pan. I lower the pan, easing the door open for Colt.

He shuffles from foot to foot, dark circles shadowing his eyes.

“Can I come in?”

I step aside, letting him in.

“What are you doing back here so soon? Did the town bump up the dedication?”

“No. Why are you holding a frying pan? Were you making eggs or something?”

I glance down at the pan. “Uh, no. I wasn’t sure who was at the door. Didn’t want to get caught off-guard.”

“Fancy security system you installed.” The corner of his mouth tips up and a glimmer of a smile crosses his face.

“Shut up, Wild. I haven’t exactly had time to figure out my security needs.”

“Fair enough.” He shoves a hand in his pocket, his eyes flicking to mine.

I set the frying pan down on the couch, folding my arms over my chest, acutely aware of the fact that I’m not wearing a bra. He can probably see everything. Not that he hasn’t seen it before, but still. Things were different then.

“What do you need?” I screw my lips together, waiting for him to say he left his phone charger or something.

“You.”

“Excuse me?” Heat floods my face and I’m sure I’m turning pink from my chest all the way up my neck.

“You, Trix. I need you.”

I swallow hard, wondering if I’m still dreaming.

Did Colt Wild just say he needs me?

“I made a mistake, Trix. I thought if we kept things casual between us that I’d be able to leave and go back to my old life in L.A.”

I stare at him, slack-jawed, my heart beating a mile a minute and blood roaring loudly in my ears.

“But it didn’t work. I told myself I was chasing my dreams—but in reality I was running away. From my feelings, from my fears. From you.”

He steps toward me, skims my cheek with the rough pad of his thumb. “I’m miserable without you, Trix. The entire time I was gone, all I thought about was you. Your laugh, your smile, the way you light up a room. What I’m trying to say here, Trix, is I love you. And I’m sorry I left. I’m an idiot, I totally blew it?—”

Standing on tiptoe, I smash my lips to his, swallowing his words. “Shut up, Wild. I love you too.”

Lifting me up in his strong arms, I wrap my legs around Colt as he kisses me long and hard and deep.

And I know, for the first time in my life, what forever tastes like.

Colt is my forever Wild.
