“It’s not that exciting.”

His hand came around my waist as we made our way to the door, and goose bumps erupted down my arms. We were doing this. I’d be Boone Benson’s girl again, if only for a short time.

Boone

My blood sangwith excitement as I held open the restaurant door for Angela. As I followed her, the view conjured images of her sprawled naked on my bed—not images from my experience, but from my imagination. First, we’d take care of the dogs; then we could start getting to know each other again.

I offered her my hand after we exited. She took it.

Suddenly, I was acting like a fucking teenager. My heart raced like I’d never held hands with a girl before, shocks spread up my arm, and my dick went hard. It was both exciting and unnerving that she had this effect on me. How was I supposed to survive the drive back home if I couldn’t control myself two steps outside the restaurant?

I stopped us and turned her to face me. “Are you sure?” I couldn’t and wouldn’t have her feeling beholden to me for scaring off Devlin the fuckwit.

“I’m sure, and I think—”

I brought my lips to hers before she could finish. Wrapping an arm behind her, I pulled her against me. I wasn’t waiting one second longer to taste her and feel her.

Flashing blue lights and a police car screaming into the parking lot interrupted us. It was the chief’s car. Angela pulled away. With one of her hands in mine, I pulled her to the side and away from the door to the restaurant.

Both doors of the police car swung open as it came screeching to a halt. Old Earl emerged with Devlin the dirtbag.

“Stop.” Earl pointed at us. “Stop right there.”

I froze in place and guided Angela behind me.

“What?” she asked.

“Don’t say a thing,” I said softly.

The chief told Devlin to stay by the car and stormed toward us.

I let go of Angela’s hand. “What’s going on, chief?”

Devlin was still out of uniform, but with a Taser in his hand this time.Shithead.

“You stand right there, miss. Benson, over there,” he bellowed, pointing to the corner.

This was not good. I glanced behind me. “Stay here and record this,” I said softly. “Remember what I said—not a fucking word.”

She pulled out her phone, and for once didn’t argue.

I raised my hands and walked to the corner.

“Hands down,” Earl said, sounding only slightly less belligerent than before.

I stopped at the corner.

The chief shoved me against the wall. “You tell me every fucking thing you know about where my nephew’s body is, or so help me God…” His eyes were filled with fury.

“I don’t know a single thing.”

His brow wrinkled, and he checked around us before continuing. “You told Dev you knew where the body was,” he said quietly with no less anger in his eyes.

I took a breath and kept my voice low, speaking slowly so that even he would understand. “I told him that if he didn’t get away from my girl, I wouldn’t help him find where Lee was buried. Those were my exact words. I didn’t say I knew where he was.”

His features relaxed as what looked like relief washed over him. “So you don’t know where he is? Or even if he’s dead or alive?”
