“Where?”

The door opened, and Milton motioned us through.

Nicole stiffened in my grasp as the detective came into view. We should have left.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

Detective Beal sneered at me. “I show up when there’s a body. What’s your excuse, Benson?”

Nicole’s hands went to her face. “No!”

I caught her as she crumpled. “You need to work on your delivery, asshole.”

Detective Beal ignored me and approached Nicole. “Where is your cousin?” he asked her. Beal flicked his head toward me. “And take him outside,” he told Milton.

I guided Nicole to the couch. I hated the idea of her facing him alone, but short of getting arrested, I didn’t have any options.

Chapter 22

Josh

Officer Milton grabbed my elbow.

“Not until she’s allowed to sit down and have some water,” I told them.

Beal nodded to Milton. “Sure. Kitchen, that way.” He pointed for Milton to go fetch the water.

“It’s not Lara?” Nicole asked Beal.

“No. I’m sorry to have to tell you this, Nicole, but Mr. Tanaka is dead.”

“Maro?”

“Yes. My condolences on your loss. Out back in your trees. Just like last time.”She started to sob. “How? Why?”

Milton showed up with a glass of water, which he handed to me, and I helped Nicole sip.

“Now get him outside,” Beal instructed Milton.

I put my hand on Nicole’s shoulder before standing. “I’ll be right outside.”

She smiled at me. “Thanks.”

As the door closed behind us, I heard Beal start again. “Now, where is your cousin?”

I sat in one of the chairs on the porch.

Milton waved toward the street. “You need to go to the sidewalk.”

“He said outside. I’m outside.”

He hesitated, as if deciding whether he should ask Beal for instructions, but he didn’t.

“Am I under arrest?”

Milton shook his head. “No, not yet.”

“Good. Then I’ll sit here and call my lawyer.” I pulled out my phone. “A little privacy, please.”
