“I should be able to get some of his time this afternoon,” I told her.

“Whatever.”

That was a word of dejection she needed to learn to use less often.

“You might need to meet with him too,” I told her.

A sharp intake of air came over the line. “No way. I’ll handle the computers. You handle the new F-H.”

I counted to three in my head before answering her. “You call him that one more time, and the deal is off.”

“Okay, all ready. You don’t need to go ballistic. I get that you’re hot for the guy.”

We’d been through this, but apparently it needed repeating. “I work with him, and he’s been very helpful. That’s all.”

“Does he have a big dick?”

I huffed. “I don’t know, and I don’t care!” I shouted loud enough that even the closed door wouldn’t hide it. “If you want the job, you’re going to drop it. Do you understand me?”

She was silent, most likely to piss me off. This was why she’d lost her last two jobs before joining us. She couldn’t keep from acting out and pushing people’s buttons.

“Well?” I repeated.

“Of course. I was just messing with ya.” Her remorse didn’t ring true.

After we hung up, I stuck two of my purchase requisitions inside a folder and gathered up my courage.

I’d been by Josh’s office first thing this morning, but instead of asking him about bringing Lara back like I’d promised her over the weekend, I’d chickened out. By now, everybody had heard of Lara’s arrest and the charges.

Folder in hand, I walked down to Josh’s office, only to find it empty—a reprieve, but only a temporary one.

“He went to the Benson building for a meeting,” Dee told me. “Do you need him?”

The truth was too embarrassing to admit, even to Dee. “I’ve got two purchase reqs I need him to sign.”

She held out her hand. “I’ll see that he takes care of them as soon as he gets back.”

My bluff had been called. I handed over the folder. “When do you think that will be?”

“No idea. Sorry.” She opened the folder and perused the two reqs I’d included. A small smile tugged at her lips. “I’ll tell Mr. B you want to see him about something urgent as soon as he’s back.”

The purchase reqs hadn’t fooled her. “Thanks, Dee,” I said as I left.

I walkedinto the Rossi’s office a little after noon.

Dee was at her desk, eating a sandwich. “Nicky came by looking for you. It seemed important.”

“Thanks.” I turned toward her office.

“She went to lunch, though.”

I shrugged and reversed course. “Not that important, I guess.”

“I know where she eats lunch on Mondays,” Dee said.
