I moved forwardand snatched the card. “Thanks. We will.” Pocketing it, I stepped back and pulled Nicole to my side. I wasn’t letting this fucker hit on my date.

Nicole didn’t resist, but rather melted into me—the reaction I craved.

Lara looked on from the doorway to the kitchen, shook her head, and retreated.

Beal’s gaze stayed on Nicole. “Call if you need anything.”

His emphasis on the wordanythingwas too obvious to ignore.Jerk.

“We will,” I replied again before Nicole could answer.

I followed him to the door and latched the deadbolt after he was out.

Nicole and Lara were in the kitchen when I returned.

The girl had obviously had a rough night. She started the microwave.

“Anything we can do?” I asked Lara.

“Yeah, shoot my neighbor so I don’t have to deal with this anymore.”

An attitude like that wasn’t doing her any favors.

“Saying shit like that doesn’t help,” Nicole lectured.

Lara pulled a teabag out of the bin on the counter. “He’s a creeper. He deserves it.”

“Did you do anything to provoke him?” Nicole asked.

“Of course not,” Lara sneered. “Now it’s my fault?”

I didn’t point out that we didn’t really know who had left the note.

The microwave dinged, and Lara pulled a mug out. “I haven’t done a thing except hang out here.” She turned to Nicole. “I worked your stupid trees like you wanted, and I found that fucking note when I went back out to put away the tools.”

Nicole glared at Lara, hands on her hips. “And what else?”

Lara added the teabag to the mug. “Nothing else.”

“Then what is the note about?” Nicole shot back.

I stayed by the doorway, not eager to enter the fray.

“How the fuck should I know? He’s a creeper.” She dunked the teabag a few times.

Nicole moved a step and placed a hand on her shoulder. “I’m here for you.”

“Thanks,” Lara said, glancing my direction. “Sorry I ruined your date with…” Her nose wrinkled. “F-H.”

Now that the argument had cooled, I entered the room.

“You were scared,” Nicole said.

“Whatever,” Lara responded on her way out.

“F-H?” I asked after Lara left.

“Uh…” Nicole cast her eyes down momentarily. “Fun-Haver.” She looked up and rolled her eyes. “It’s one of her odd compliments,” she added with half a laugh.
