“That’s why I wanted you to come in to sign.”

For this amount, I’d walk there if I had to. “I’ll be right in.”

“Great.”

As soon as we hung up, I ran to the house and found Winston. “I have to go into work for a few minutes.”

He promptly informed me that he would be driving me.

After brushing the wood chips off my jeans, I gathered up my purse and waited for him. Arguing would have slowed us down and not changed the outcome. I wasn’t wasting another minute cleaning up if it delayed getting the money to save Casa di Rossi. Brushing my hair could be done in the car.

After Winston let me out,I walked the back way to get to Rosa to avoid coming anywhere near Josh’s office. I found her behind her desk and closed the door behind me.

“Working in the yard,” I said to excuse my appearance.

“People have been missing you, you know,” she said as I sat.

“Thanks. I’m only taking a few days off.”Just until Josh leaves. “So, what do I need to sign?”

“Mr. B. took the papers and asked you to join him for lunch to go over them.”

I stood. “Then call me when you have them back in your hands. Or better yet, could you do me a favor and drop them by my house later?”

Rosa shifted in her chair, and instead of a nod, I got what looked like a shake of her head. “I can’t do that.”

I leaned on the back of the chair. “Come again?”

She bit her lip. “He didn’t exactlyaskyou to join him for lunch. He said you two had to talk, and if you balked to tell you it was a condition of him signing off.”

“Sounds like him,” I huffed.

“I don’t know what the problem is, Nicky, but I drafted the change myself. It’s all good for you. I can guarantee that.”

I loosened my clenched jaw and sighed. “Okay, I give. Where is this lunch?”

“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked. “You know that’s part of my job.”

Her position did entail dealing with issues between employees, but not like mine. The last thing I needed was for people to know about me and Josh.

“No, Rosa. It’s nothing.”

She cocked her head. “Whatever you say. Mr. B said he’d meet you at your favorite lunch spot.”

“Which one?”

“He said you’d know.”

I thanked her and left.

Winston was outside with the car door opened when I exited the building. “Sorry. I have to make a stop for lunch first.”

“Sure.” He held the door open and closed it after me, which I’d learned was part of the safety protocol I wasn’t allowed to complain about.

“Where to?” he asked after starting the engine.

“Taco Bandito, three blocks down,” I said.
