I’d been groped before—what girl hadn’t? But this wasn’t that at all.

He didn’t go any further, although I wouldn’t have minded. Each gentle touch sent a tingle of hope—a hope that Kelly and Adam had a chance free of family complications. The contact was his unspoken question as to whether I was comfortable with him, and my answer to him was a clear yes.

I put it out there in plain English. “I’m glad I met you.”

He gave me a gentle squeeze. “Me too. No, scratch that.Gladisn’t a strong enough word.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really.”

Being up against his side with his gentle touches told me what he didn’t need to verbalize, and the bulge in his pants completed the story. I was attracted to him, and he to me, although something still held him back.

I’d thought my kissing-student comment had been pretty obvious, but he’d limited things to holding me and cuddling. Had I been too forward?

Now it was me and him, Kelly and Adam, suddenly without the complication of family history. The chance to turn fake to real loomed. There was only one way to find out.

My inhibitions took a backseat, and I remembered my sister’s advice. A hand on the thigh that moves up tells more than a dozen words.

My insides crackled with anticipation of knowing what “more than glad to have met you” really meant. But as I contemplated making the first move, fear took over, and I froze in place.

Was this the trepidation guys felt when they considered asking a girl on a date?

Chapter 22

Adam

Her hand movedto my thigh, and my cock strained even harder against my zipper. Then her hand started up my leg. Her eyes stayed glued on the television, but the nonverbal implication was obvious. She was a red-hot tease.

Generally, I could take some teasing, but not tonight. “Careful, Sugarbear.”

She feigned innocence. “What?”

“If you start something, I won’t be held responsible for where it ends up.”

Her hand shifted farther, just short of my aching cock. “Start what?”

I pulled her hand away.

Was I going nuts? This girl was offering the release I craved, and I was the one pulling back? Since when? It wasn’t against the rules, that much was clear, but it didn’t need to be rushed either.

I captured her gaze. I knew exactly how to scare her off for tonight. “I’m not your type. I don’t do nice. I don’t do gentle.” The words had worked before, and I’d just sentenced myself to only hand action tonight. I was nuts.

Her hand moved back to my thigh. “I thought I proved you wrong about my risk aversion with our discussion in the shower. You know, where you got scared and ran away?”

I got up. “Want anything to drink?”

“You can’t just leave.”

I shook my head and continued to the fridge. “I asked if you wanted something to drink.”

She followed me into the kitchen. “Why do I scare you?”

I ignored the question and pulled open the refrigerator door. “Wine or beer?”

She pushed the door closed. “Answer me, goddammit.”

“Nothing scares me, princess.”
