Gleason ran the tape back again and restarted the shooting sequence. “I still don’t see anything that triggered it.”

A few minutes later, I texted Kelly after starting up the car.

ME: Will call when close

Given the state of traffic, that wouldn’t be soon.

Now I was on duty twenty-four hours a day between Kelly in the off hours and the other cases during the day. I dialed Neil.

“What’s up, Romeo?”

The ribbing was already getting old.

“If you send me a copy of today’s video, and a few prior days, I’ll get started on it tonight.”

“Are you sure that won’t cramp your style with the lady?” Sarcasm dripped off his words.

“Bite me.”

“That’s her job.”

“We could switch, and I’ll stay home while you stay up all night keeping the little princess safe.”

He sighed. “Just kidding. I’m sure it’s hard work.”

The only kidding part was that he didn’t actually feel a single ounce of pity for me.

“The video?”

“Sure. I’ll send it when I get back to the office.”

Tonight he’d be curled up at home with a beer and a soft bed while I had to work around the clock, and sleep on the floor.

Chapter 13

Kelly

I’d been waiting almostan hour when Adam finally texted.

ADAM: Outside now

I loaded my umbrella and phone into my purse and started down.

As promised, Adam was directly outside, leaning against his car with his arms folded. He opened the door for me as I approached. “About time.”

I stopped mid-stride. “You’re the one who’s late.”

He held the door open. “You should’ve been ready.”

I slid into the seat and pulled the door closed without his help.

He climbed in and started the car, still without an apology.

After two blocks of silence, I couldn’t take it any longer. “What’s your problem?”

“I don’t have a problem.”

That was utter bullshit.
