He caught my wrist just before I connected. “Once is enough.” His grip on my wrist was strong as he moved closer. “Are we done?”

“I think we’re just getting started.” The words slipped past my mouth filter before I realized how flirty they sounded.

His eyes held mine as his mouth slowly turned up in a smile. “That we are.”

I returned the smile, but didn’t have any words to go with it.

His eyes froze me in place. His mouth opened slightly, and he licked his lips.

The simple gesture sent a rush of liquid heat to my lady parts.

An instant later, the moment evaporated. “Just remember the rules.” He let me go and turned back to laying out the comforter.

Should I say something? If so, I had no idea what.

Pulling a nightshirt from my drawer, I took the first turn in the bathroom.

My pre-bedtime routine included makeup remover, a hot washcloth on my face to open the pores, a thorough wash, and finally a moisturizer.

He knocked before I was done. “You okay in there? It’s been twenty minutes.”

I rubbed in the last of my moisturizer. “It has not.”

A loud huff came from the other side of the door before I opened it.

His eyes fell momentarily to my chest before rising to meet mine. “Done?”

I’d changed into a Dodger’s T-shirt for bed, and my nipples were visibly pokey against the thin cotton.

I backed up. “The blue toothbrush is a clean extra if you want to use that.”

“Thanks.”

After he walked in, I started out, but I looked back and caught his eyes dropping to the hem of my T-shirt, which barely covered my ass.

He moved to shut the door. “You can turn off the light. I’ll find my way in the dark.”

I set my noise machine to rain and flipped off the light. Stepping over the comforter he’d set out on the floor, I slipped under the covers in my bed. Settling back into the softness of the mattress, I wondered for a second how well Adam would do on the floor.

He’d signed up for this. It wasn’t my fault if he wasn’t comfortable. Neither of us knew Yolanda would come back, screwing up the plan.

Slowly my eyes acclimated to the dim light from the fluorescent star dots on my ceiling.

I listened to the flush, the washing, and the spitting from the other side of the door, more nervous than I should have been.

He was the FBI guy sent here to keep me safe, so why was I apprehensive? I was in my own bed, in my own room, protected by a gun-toting fed. What could go wrong?

It shouldn’t matter that my family wouldn’t approve. Hell, they’d have a fit if they even knew I’d eaten dinner with a Cartwright, much less invited him into my home. It took more than two hands to count the times Daddy had cursed out the Cartwrights in my presence. I’d asked why twice, and been shut down both times. I wasn’t old enough, I’d been told.

Hating the Cartwrights was a given in our family. Daddy was never wrong about such things.

I suspected Dennis knew Daddy’s reason for hating them, but he must’ve been sworn to secrecy because I couldn’t get it out of him, even when he was drunk.

The fan in the bathroom went silent, the sliver of light under the door went dark, and Adam came out.

With the light given off by my star dots, I could see everything—absolutely everything.

He was naked.
