He took in a loud breath through gritted teeth, but held his tongue.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

The glance he shot me told me the answer before his words arrived. “No. I do not.”

We arrived at my house, and he parked on the street, shutting off the engine.

I reached for the door handle.

His hand went to my shoulder. “Stop.” It was another command from DA.

I pulled my hand away and turned to him. “What?”

His eyes softened. “I apologize for barking at you earlier. It’s a sensitive subject, okay?”

I nodded, happy for the thaw in his mood. “You need to work on that boyfriend routine of yours. My boyfriend would open up to me about things important to him.”

He snorted. “And my girlfriend wouldn’t push me before I was ready. Truce?”

“Truce,” I replied. Learning the borders he put around things was going to take time. “Can we go in now?”

“Sure. Just let me check things out first.”

The implication made me shiver. “You think the Ghost might be in my house?”

“Ghost?”

“The note writer.”

“I’m responsible for your safety, so I check rather than assume.” He opened his door and exited the car. “You come with me.”

I left the car and joined him on the walkway to my door.

Back in fake-boyfriend mode, he put his arm around me as we walked to the house.

After I unlocked the door for him, his gun came out.

I followed him around as he checked all the rooms, doors, and windows on the first floor and then the second. He even opened the closets.

“Satisfied?” I asked after he put the gun away.

“It pays to be thorough.”

I walked toward the stairs. “Let me show you your room downstairs.” I assumed he planned on sleeping in the house rather than in his car.

He followed me down. “Sure.”

“I’ve got a nice bottle of scotch if you want to join me for a nightcap.” I still hoped to get us back on better terms after misjudging the Dennis situation in the car.

“Why not?” He followed me down the stairs.

Before we reached the kitchen, the doorbell rang.

His gun came out again. “Are you expecting anybody?”

I headed for the door. “No.”

He followed me as the bell rang again. “Tell me if you recognize who it is.” He stood to the side while I used the peephole.
