Adam and I kept up our playful feeding routine. On the next forkful I got an honest to God laugh out of him by threatening to miss his mouth.

He’d backed me into the corner of the booth, and with all the touching and giggling, our fake date had turned into something more fun than any real date I’d been on. He’d maneuvered us into a fun spot without me even noticing he was doing it.

I pulled his mouth close to mine. “Can I tell you something?”

He arched an eyebrow. “Only if you remember the rules.”

After my third glass of prosecco, I had to think hard about that. “Okay, I’ll do anything you tell me.”

“I want you to slip your panties off and hand them to me.”

I jerked back. “What?”

He grinned. “I’m kidding.”

I let out a breath and relaxed.

He slid a finger under my chin and whispered. “I was kidding this time. But a reaction like that could get us both in serious trouble. If you can’t play along, we shouldn’t start this. Are we clear?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Sorry.”

He moved in so close, now only a breath away. “Sorry doesn’t cut it. Next time we’re in public and I tell you to do something without saying please, no matter how dumb it sounds, follow my instructions immediately and exactly.”

I closed my eyes and nodded. It took a second to register. “Like a reverse magic word?”

He pulled back. “Exactly.”

“That’s screwy.”

“Can you remember that?”

“Sure. If you say please, you’re being nice. If you don’t, you’re being DA.”

“DA?”

I smiled. “Dictatorial asshole.”

He shrugged. “Not how I would have put it, but it’s important to keep you safe. You have to be one-hundred-percent certain you can go through with this.”

“I am.”

He gave me a questioning look.

“Are you trying to talk me out of this?”

“Only trying to be clear. Once we start, there’s no turning back. Do you understand that?”

“Yes. I need to do this.”

Our waiter came to remove the empty dinner plates and offered us a dessert menu.

“Now, the rule I meant earlier was the one about absolute honesty. What did you want to say?”

Ah, right. Honesty had been one of his rules. “Okay. I am honestly having a good time.”

He closed the distance between us.

I closed my eyes.
