The next move would test her resolve. I slid in until our thighs touched and snaked an arm around her. “You need to trust me, Kelly.”

She didn’t shy away. “I heard that part already.”

I picked up my glass. “Now pick up your glass and smile,” I said softly.

The guy was doing a bad job of not being obvious as he looked toward our end of the room.

“What?”

I turned my head toward her, smiled and spoke softly into her ear. “Do it now, and smile while you look at me.”

She did, and I held her eyes with mine.

I clinked our glasses. “Now giggle and drink.”

The giggle was halfhearted, but she did take the sip I’d asked for.

I put down my glass, put my hand to her cheek, and moved in close. “We’re being watched.”

Her eyes widened.

“By the door, blue shirt.”

She glanced over, more overtly than I would have liked.

My hand guided her chin to look back to me. “Smile. Do you know him?”

She gave me just the slightest shake of her head.

I moved closer and brushed my lips over hers.

Her eyes closed.

I gave her a brief kiss, which she didn’t resist.

I pulled back. “You taste wonderful.”

That got the full giggle I’d wanted earlier.

I glanced toward the door again. Blue Shirt was gone.

I kept my arm around her, speared a piece of my ravioli, and offered it to her.

She sucked it in. “That’s good too.” She reciprocated by feeding me a bite of her fettuccine.

I didn’t get quite all of it, and a drip of sauce fell onto my shirt, which resulted in another giggle from Kelly.

After another two bites I asked, “Did you recognize him?”

“No. And he’s gone now.”

I smiled and fed her another bite. This was actually more fun than I’d thought it would be. “He might come back in.”

Kelly

I hadn’t recognizedthe man in the blue shirt, but that didn’t mean much.
