“A lot of good that does me now.”

Dennis moved forward. “Look, she told me it was you, and her story didn’t change until after we broke up.”

Adam’s head jerked. “What the fuck did you say?”

Serena wandered back into the room.

Dennis looked down. “I’m sorry you got hurt, but I honestly thought you’d assaulted my girlfriend.”

Adam huffed. “You got shit for memory. Celeste was my girl, not yours.”

Dennis’s brow creased. “Your girl?”

Serena stepped forward. “Did you two idiots really not know that this whole time?”

Dennis looked at her incredulously, followed by Adam.

Serena laughed. “I thought everybody knew. She was two-timing Alex—make that three-timing him—with both of you to make him jealous. Why do you think she left school right after he did?”

Adam’s shoulders slumped. “Seriously?”

Dennis shook his head. “I had no idea.”

“She told me it was Alex,” Adam said.

Serena laughed. “And she probably told Alex it was Dennis.”

Knowing what the episode had cost Adam, I didn’t think it was funny.

“So?” Dennis asked, extending his hand.

Adam took a long breath. “She was one crazy bitch.” He accepted Dennis’s hand and shook. “Apology accepted.”

Dennis grimaced.

It took a few seconds to register, but I realized Adam was attempting to crush my brother’s hand.

I forced my way between them, breaking up the test of strength. “Let’s go into the other room and open that bottle.”

They followed, with Dennis shaking out his hand.

Before long, everybody had a glass of expensive scotch in hand, and they were all commenting on it.

I couldn’t tell the difference between this and Adam’s regular stuff.

“A toast to the couple,” Dennis said loudly.

The group quieted.

Dennis held up his glass. “To a long, happy, and fruitful—”

“That means lots of babies,” Serena added.

The giggles took a second to subside.

Dennis continued, “Marriage. To the future Mr. Cartwright and Mrs. Benson-Cartwright.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright,” I corrected him.
