I moved to the door and peeked around. The man had his back mostly to me, but Kelly was behind him.

I pulled back and moved my finger from the ready position alongside the trigger guard to the trigger itself. Whatever I did, this was going to go down quickly. If he kept talking and I moved quietly, I could get closer. From here, it was too dangerous with Kelly right behind him.

I wiped the sweat off my brow.

“Why Evelyn?” Kelly asked.

“Len picked her,” Baldy responded.

Len?

My breath caught. He meant Len Sanderson. This guy was in league with SMK.

When I peeked again, Kelly was fully behind him. I cleared the corner and stepped into the hallway to get closer.

The damned floor squeaked.

I yelled the standard call out. “FBI, drop the weapon.” My heart raced.

He grabbed Kelly and turned to face me with his arm around her neck. “Back off.”

His gun was at her temple. He had the advantage here.

I sighted at his head, but he wasn’t tall, and he was mostly blocked by Kelly.

“FBI,” I said again. “Drop the weapon, and we can all walk out of here.”

“Adam,” Kelly cried.

I took a step closer.

Baldy’s gun hand shook, and his voice cracked. “Get back or she dies.”

I stopped moving forward. “Kelly, it’s going to be okay.” My heart raced into overdrive. I’d practiced hostage situations, but nothing had prepared me for this, with Kelly in the line of fire.

She nodded as much as his grasp would allow.

Baldy was melting down. His gun waved between pointing at me and pointing at Kelly. “You drop it. Or else.”

I pointed my weapon off to the side. “Okay. Take it easy.”

“Drop it,” he yelled.

“Kelly, it’ll be okay. Just remember what I’d never ask you to do.”

I could only hope she remembered.

Recognition flashed in her eyes as she nodded again, and her heel came down hard on Baldy’s foot.

He yowled, “Fuck!”

Kelly slipped down a few inches as his grasp loosened.

I raised my gun.

One shot.

One scream.
