This was going downhill way too fast. “Kells, please don’t go. He set this up to talk about something else. We just can’t move too fast. The timing needs to be right.”

She paused at the door. “You can tell me about it tomorrow.”

She’d been gone five minutes before I knew what to do. I got online and ordered flowers to be delivered to her at work.

When I got home,I searched the internet and found the hotel on K Street, Adam had told me about—the one his father favored. The restaurant there was a standard hotel grill, nothing too fancy, so I picked out a nice, conservative dress from my work collection and paired it with the red heels Adam liked so much.

My doorbell rang.

Kirby marched in, bag in hand. “You said it was an emergency.”

“It is. I’m meeting Adam’s dad.”

“First time, huh?”

I nodded. “Yeah, and I want to make a good impression.”

“Easy peasy,” she said. “Take a seat.”

I sat in the chair and draped a towel over my shoulders.

She moved a floor lamp closer and opened her cosmetic bag on the table.

Kirby had been a makeup artist before going to college to get into accounting. She was ten times better at this than I was.

“You’re wearing black?” she asked.

I lifted the towel. “I think simple and elegant for tonight.”

She nodded. “That works, but personally I’d go with something a little lower cut.”

“I don’t want to look like a tramp.”

“No, but if you’ve got it, flaunt it, and you’ve definitely got it. You’re gorgeous.”

I blushed. “I think I’ll stick with this.”

A half hour later, we stood in front of my bathroom mirror.

“What do you think?” she asked.

“I think you’re a true artist.” Even though I’d tried, I could never get the hang of blending in different shades and making each eye look the same.

“It’s just practice. Now go knock ’em dead.”

She had no idea how relevant death could be when talking about a Benson-Cartwright meeting.

It was almost six when I left. My evil plan was to surprise Adam after he and his father had already settled in.

We had to tackle the family feud issue, and I meant to force it. Like Adam said, we were stronger together.

I was sure that after his father got over the initial shock, he’d see how right we were for each other. He’d surely want what would make his only son happy, and it was my job to convince him I was the answer to that—the right answer.
