I dialed the ASAC.

Dempsey picked up right away. “Well?”

“We have a DB at the house. It’s the other Smithsonian employee, Evelyn Gossen. We also have personal items that look like trophies from our victims, as well as from one additional missing person who could be an even earlier victim. It’ll take DNA matches from forensics to confirm it, but it looks like we found the kill site in the basement. A lot of blood has been spilled down there.”

“Okay. I’ll get the coroner on the way. Leave that site to forensics, and work up your shooting report tonight.”

I wasn’t leaving Kelly alone tonight under any circumstances. “It’ll have to be the morning. I have to relieve Brolin watching Benson until forensics here tells us there wasn’t an accomplice.”

“Okay for tonight, but the protection is off first thing in the morning unless we have an indication there’s an accomplice. I expect you in the office tomorrow.”

“I’ll let forensics know.” The geeks wouldn’t be happy to hear the news.

Kelly also deserved a call from me.

My finger hovered over the phone before I changed my mind. This news needed to be in person.

“I’m going into the office to write it up while it’s still fresh,” Neil said. “You should probably do the same.”

He was echoing Dempsey, as always.

“Tomorrow. Drop me at my place. I need to relieve Rylie on protection.”

He raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything.

I’d been right. The forensics guys weren’t happy to hear my interpretation of Dempsey’s demand that we confirm or rule out an accompliceandconfirm the DNA downstairs, all by tomorrow.

“You know putting more samples in makes everything go slower not faster,” the lead tech grumbled.

As we drove off, Neil spoke up again. “You know inspection won’t be happy if you wait until tomorrow to write up the shooting.”

The Bureau’s Inspection Division conducted an internal investigation of every agent-involved shooting, and that was in my future now.

“Tomorrow will have to do.” Tonight Kelly needed me, and I needed her.

“Your call.” His tone conveyed his disapproval.

Kelly

I couldn’t concentrateon the TV with the sour state of my stomach. The thought that my bad choices had led to the shooting ate at me. And Rylie’s warning about how it would impact Adam hurt the worst.

When my phone rang, I couldn’t get to it fast enough, hoping I could at least hear Adam’s voice. The screen disappointed me when it showed Momma’s name.

“Hi, Momma,” I answered.

Rylie got up and wandered toward the kitchen, blowing on her steaming coffee cup.

“It’s wonderful news that you met someone, but your father didn’t tell me any more than his name is Adam. So what does he do?”

“Momma, you’ll meet him in due time.” I wasn’t sure when that would be.

“I could fly out, if that would make it easier.”

“Momma, it’s not that. We’re not ready yet.

“At least tell me he’s from a good family.”
