“Of course not, but it seems you let the guards slack off.”

Chapter 30

Adam

My cell rang.It was Kelly, but way earlier than normal. It wasn’t even near lunchtime yet.

“Hey, Sugarbear, what’s up?”

“I need to be picked up…now.” Her tone was off, pleading more than anything, which wasn’t like her.

“What’s the problem?”

“Please.”

It obviously wasn’t something she wanted to talk about right now.

“Give me a few minutes. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Thank you,” she managed before hanging up.

It probably wouldn’t have helped if I had tried probing any deeper, not that I got the chance.

I dialed Dempsey and told him I needed a relief agent over here for the rest of the day.

He wasn’t happy about it, but we didn’t have much choice. Letting Kelly leave work unprotected wasn’t an option, and neither was a gap in surveillance here. It was up to the ASAC to figure out the manpower problem.

I pulledup and parked in the red zone in front of Kelly’s building.

A DC cop on foot patrol walked up as I got out. “Can’t park there.”

I stood by the car, not seeing Kelly anywhere yet, and ignored the uniform while I typed my text.

ME: Here

“You understand English?” the cop asked, pulling the ticket pad from his pocket.

I walked around him to put my back to the Smithsonian building and pulled out my creds, holding them close enough to my chest that no one but the officer would be able to see. “Won’t be long.”

He shook his head, pocketed the pad, and walked off with a mumble about “feebs.” It was never appreciated when we pulled rank.

I turned back toward the building.

Kelly walked my way, without her usual smile.

A uniformed Smithsonian guard watched from the doorway with an equally sour look.

I opened the car door.

Despair screwed up her countenance, and she buried her face against my shoulder. “It’s not fair.” She wrapped her arms around me, and the sobbing started.

I’d had the warning of her tone on the phone earlier, but was unprepared for the waterworks. I rubbed her back. “It’ll be okay. Tell me about it, Sugarbear.” I kissed the top of her head.

She continued to sob and shook in my arms. “I didn’t do it.”

“Do what?”
