I followed her to get my morning tea.

I pulled the lever for hot water while she punched in her coffee selection.

“Benson.” It was Mr. Heiden from behind me. “My office. Now.” He glared at me while I removed the teabag from my cup and gathered it up.

Kirby avoided eye contact.

“Yes, sir.” I followed him, preparing to get reamed again about forgetting the SIM cards this morning.

Through the glass, I could see Krause when we reached his office.

Fuck.

Either the SIM cards were a bigger deal than I thought, or Krause had noticed me come in late after all, and now I had to pay the price.

I followed my boss in and tried to get ahead of the problem. “I didn’t mean to be late.”

Krause shook his head. “Sit down.”

Heiden moved to his chair behind the desk, and I took the chair farthest from Krause.

“Benson, isn’t it?” Krause asked.

He probably remembered me from the time I’d been late to his meeting, the only time we’d ever met.

I nodded.

The cleft between Krause’s bushy eyebrows narrowed. “You’re going with Paul here down to OPS. But before that, I want to know who you let get by security.” Apparently Krause was allowed to use Mr. Heiden’s first name. Rank had its privileges.

His question didn’t make any sense. “I don’t understand.”

“Paul tells me you were auditing the exit procedures on Saturday.”

“She’s our best. Meticulous attention to detail,” Heiden offered.

Krause looked ready to blow a gasket. “Then how did we let several million dollars worth of objects walk right out the door?”

My mouth dropped. “What went missing?”

“Never mind that. Answer my question. Who did you let bypass the procedures?”

“Not a soul,” I answered firmly. I wracked my brain for any time Saturday when I’d paid less than complete attention and came up empty. “We shut down the exit for lunch, and that was all.”

Krause turned his venom on my boss. “You and OPS told me the procedures were foolproof.”

“They absolutely are,” Heiden started.

“The results say otherwise,” Krause shot back. “OPS is reviewing the tapes now. You will escort this young lady down there, and by the end of the day, I expect to know what happened.” He rose, and a second later the door slammed behind him.

“What happened?” I asked.

“Jewelry that was supposed to go on exhibit this week was found missing this morning.”

Yolanda’s call came back to me. “The Hollywood exhibit?”

“I don’t have the details. Anyway, like he said, we’re going down to OPS to get this straightened out.”

“You don’t think I—”
