“I should have known better.”

I pulled him to a stop. “Stop that.”

His brows drew together. “Stop what?”

“You told me to accept a compliment from you. The least you could do is reciprocate.”

“You don’t get it. That was a dangerous situation back there, and it was all my fault. What if—”

“What if nothing,” I said. “How come you can’t listen to me for a change?” I let go of his hand and started walking home. The man was impossible.

Adam quickly caught up to me, and this time he pulled me to a stop, with hands on each of my shoulders. “Sugarbear, I’m listening to you now.”

I drew in a breath. “I know you would never do anything to hurt me.”

He pulled me into a hug. “Of course not.”

“I was trying to say thank you for forcing me to try a new experience. I had a great time today.”

He rubbed my back. “But—”

I pushed away enough to give him my meanest scowl. “Stop with the buts,” I insisted.

He squeezed my ass. “But I like your butt.”

“You keep it up, mister, and you can sleep on the floor tonight.”

His smile grew. “I apologize if I’m being a butthead. I accept your compliment, and your thanks, and I had a great time with you as well. How’s that, Sugarbear?”

Chapter 25

Kelly

On Monday morning,Adam started his shower late, and I ended up running late as well. Naturally, it had nothing to do with me changing my mind about what I was going to wear today, or my hair dryer deciding to die. It was all Adam’s fault.

He was the reason I hadn’t gotten to sleep on time.

When I got downstairs, Adam tapped his watch as a nonverbal reminder that I was late.

I passed him on the way to the kitchen. “I know.”

“You’re the one who told me you couldn’t be late on a Monday.”

The kitchen was empty, save the plate of scrambled eggs waiting for me.

“Where’s Yolanda?” I grabbed my phone off the charger.

He followed me into the kitchen. “She had to leave early to set up her exhibit.”

“Right.” I forked as much scrambled egg into my mouth as I could, while Adam tapped his foot. The time on the microwave put me closer to thirty minutes late. I swallowed and gobbled another monster bite before heading for the door. “Let’s go,” I mumbled.

Grabbing my purse, I realized another mistake. I’d forgotten to change to my second purse. Pulling open the coat closet, I located it on the shelf and pulled it down to start transferring contents.

Adam pulled my wallet from the broken purse and stuffed it in the other. “We don’t have time for that. Phone and wallet, everything else can wait.”

I’d already put the phone in, but searched the bottom for my hair brush and keys. I found the keys.

He grabbed both bags off the table. “We’re leaving.” He pushed me toward the door.
