And a force of nature. Jennifer had saved me triple-digit millions yesterday, and today she’d given me a jolt like she was wired with electricity.

I stopped outside our building to take a few calming breaths.

Upstairs, when I opened the door to the executive area, Jay was seated by Cindy’s desk, chatting.

I could hear Larry on the speakerphone in his office.

“Am I putting salt in your coffee today?” Cindy asked.

I passed Jay, who cocked a brow.

“No. I expect her in later,” I responded.

Jay rose from his chair. “I want to hear the real story about Talbot.”

Cindy tilted her head. “He doesn’t believe me.”

I opened my office door. “I don’t know why not.”

“Well?” Jay asked.

I entered and waved him in as well. “We closed the deal on better terms than expected.”

He followed. “I won’t believe it until I see it in black and white.”

I picked up the signed contract on my desk and handed it to him. “By the way, I owe you an apology.”

He accepted the papers and sat. “Cindy, could you come in here, please?”

She appeared at the door.

“Would you repeat that?” Jay asked me. “I want it on the record.”

I shook my head. “I owe Jay an apology for underestimating Jennifer, and you can write that down for him.”

“I could make a plaque, if you want,” she said to Jay, before addressing me. “But I would say you’re apologizing to the wrong person.”

She was right. The apology needed to go to Jennifer.

Jay ignored her comment.

Cindy retreated to her station.

Jay sucked in a breath when he got to the critical page in the contract. “I told you she would do fine. Where do you think she learned negotiating?”

I leafed through my messages. “No idea. Maybe her father is a used-car salesman.” I meant it as a joke, but realized I knew absolutely nothing about her beyond her name—and that she’d worked in Jay’s department before yesterday.

“Maybe.” He finished and stood, taking the contract with him. “I’ll get this back to you after I make a copy.”

I waved him off and picked up the phone to return the first of my calls for the morning.

A half hour later, I spied Jennifer through my open door, walking by on the way to her office.

She didn’t look in my direction.
