I put my water down. “This afternoon they told seven of us that we were leaving the company with a spin-off.”

“Those things happen, I guess. Does that mean we have to move?”

I ignored the question to start with. “If I go with that one, it’s a promotion to supervisor.”

She stood and gave me a high five as she passed me on her way to the kitchen. “That deserves a toast. I knew sooner or later they’d see how hard you work.”

Her pride warmed me. She was the most supportive sister anyone could ask for.

She opened the fridge and pulled out the bottle of cheap red wine we’d used for cooking yesterday.

“If I went with them, it would be a raise and stock options.”

She unscrewed the cap and pulled down two glasses. “How much of a raise?”

I sat up. “Fourteen thousand.”

“Fourteen? That’s fucking fantastic.” She put down the bottle and screwed the cap back on. “That calls for the good stuff.”

I agreed.

She pulled our special bottle of cabernet from the back of the cabinet.

“No! That one’s for when you graduate.” We’d been saving it.

She started to unwrap the foil over the cork. It was our only bottle of wine that wasn’t screw top.

“We can get another,” she said.

Giving in, I located the corkscrew in the drawer. “And, I’d get two minions working for me.”

She handed me the bottle. “That’s a real supervisor job, then. Next thing you know, you’ll be a manager.”

I worked the corkscrew into the cork, pushed down the levers, and pulled it free. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

She held out a glass for me to pour. “What’s the other opportunity?”

“Working for the CEO.”

She pulled the glass back. “You meanhim?”

I took the other glass from the counter and poured. “The one and only.”

She put her glass forward, and I poured.

“To you, sis.” She raised her glass.

I raised mine as well. “Thanks.”

We both sipped.

The wine wasn’t as sweet as what we usually had, but then I had no experience with good wine—and it hadn’t been chilled either. The wine snobs all had cellars or separate wine coolers, didn’t they? It had to make a difference.

Ramona followed me back to the couch. “It sounds like the second one is also a step up.”

I sat and nodded. “It probably is, but I would have to work with him, and I don’t know if I could stomach that.”

“Have you ever considered that you could be wrong about him?”
