“Can I go?” Syd asked.

Dennis waved him away. “Sure.”

I felt Syd’s accusatory stare as he left the room.

The minutes ticked by slowly.

Chapter 43

Dennis

Finally Oleg’s phone rang.“Yeah?…Are you sure?… Thanks. Yeah that’s it for now, I think.” He hung up. “They all showed up four weeks ago on the fifteenth. There’s no trace of them before that.”

I drew in a relieved breath. At least now I knew what Cartwright’s plan had been and how he’d executed it—at least, almost all of it. “Thanks, Oleg. That’s it for now.”

Oleg seemed happy to get out of my office, and he closed the door.

“You believe me, don’t you?” Jennifer asked.

“Of course I do, Angel.”

She settled into her seat, seeming relieved.

“You told me what you did and didn’t do, and I have to get to the bottom of this without giving the guys that piece of the puzzle.”

“I can quit if I have to,” she mumbled.

I rounded the desk. “Not on your life.” I pulled her up to stand and took her into my arms.

“Wouldn’t that make it easier?” she mumbled into my shoulder.

“No. We’re in this together, you and me. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I let you do that?”

“A smart one, maybe.”

I let go of her. “Bullshit. Now get going. Go work with Oleg. Show him what you do on the web, answer any questions he has. We have to figure out how they set us both up, and I have a call to make.”

She turned for the door.

“And leave your hair like that,” I added.

She turned. “It’s more professional up.”

“I could make it an order.”

She shook her head and left.

I lifted the phone and dialed downstairs.

Ed answered. “Yes, boss?”

“Ed, we think somebody got access to Jennifer’s computer on the fourteenth or fifteenth, and I need to know who.”

“Does this have to do with thoseTimesarticles?”

“It does. It looks like someone planted something on her computer, and I need to know who.”

“You don’t think she was involved?”
