Security guys were always overly paranoid about talking in public.

Oleg followed me in and Ed brought up the rear, closing the door after him. “Oleg’s guys found something on your phone you should be aware of.”

I took my seat behind the desk. “Okay. What?”

Oleg spoke. “It’s a piece of tracking software.”

He still didn’t look or sound over eighteen to me. “How long?”

Oleg shifted in his seat. “We can’t say how long it has been on the phone, or how it got there.”

“Given the Cartwright situation, they could be behind this,” Ed suggested. “Monitoring your calls and your physical location.”

“Son of a bitch. And you know it’s Cartwright?”

Oleg shook his head. “We can’t say yet. That will take some time.”

“We can clean the malware off the phone,” Ed offered.

Oleg concurred with a nod.

I thought for a moment. “Will they be able to tell?”

Ed looked to Oleg. “Yes. Definitely,” he said.

That settled it for me. “I don’t want them to suspect anything while you try to track it down. I’ll get a new phone in the meantime. Thanks, guys.”

Ed rose, and Oleg took the hint.

“One more thing,” Ed said. “It’ll have to be a new number. You have to leave the old number assigned to the old phone.”

I rounded the desk and patted Oleg on the back. “Good work, and thanks guys. Keep working on Jennifer’s computer.”

Two hours later,Cindy handed me a new iPhone box and a clear case.

“Who gets your new number?” she asked.

“The senior staff. And send it to Dad, along with the rest of the family. That should do it for now.” I opened the box. “You didn’t.” The phone was a godawful rose gold.

“You’ll be stylish for a change.”

I knew she’d picked the color on purpose to annoy me.

I put the ugly thing down.

At least now I knew how Cartwright had followed us on our shareholder visits.

Cindy calledme back into Dennis’s office around three.

The IT guy, Oleg, and Syd were already there.

Syd wore a sour face. “We found what they were after.”
