“What was on your computer that would be incriminating?” Jay asked Jennifer.

She shrugged. “Nothing that I know of.”

“There has to be something,” he countered.

Syd pointed out the obvious. “We don’t have the machine, so we’re not going to know until they tell us.”

“Not necessarily true,” I told him.

That drew a befuddled look from Syd.

I picked up the office phone and dialed down to IT. “Oleg, get your butt back up to my office.”

Jennifer gave me a knowing look.

“We can make a clone,” I told the group. I explained how I’d just gotten a copy of my machine from this morning delivered.

Oleg entered, breathless from what must have been a sprint back upstairs. “Is something wrong with the computer?”

“No. I want you to make a clone of Miss Hanley’s computer, just like you did mine. Then I want you to work with Syd here to comb through until we find it.”

He looked puzzled. “What are we looking for?”

“I have no fucking idea. That’s Syd’s job. Syd, you and Oleg and his guys are to keep at it all night, if that’s what it takes.”

Syd sighed and stood. “We better get started, then.”

“Okay, guys,” I said. “We get back together as soon as they find something.”

Larry came over before leaving. “What do I tell the analysts when they call? Cartwright is probably already on the phone with them.”

I didn’t have a good answer to that.

“Tell them to look forward to the other shoe dropping soon,” Jennifer offered.

“What’s the other shoe?”

“Our counterattack, but don’t tell them that.”

Larry nodded. “I like it.”

“We still need to carry on with our normal business,” Jay said, pointing to me. “And you owe me some time reviewing the inventory analysis before I finalize it.”

An hour later, we were going over the inventory analysis downstairs in Jay’s office when his phone rang.

He answered and handed it over to me. “It’s Cindy for you.”

“Yeah?”

“Ed is here, and he says he needs to see you right away.”

“I’ll be up in a few.”

I left Jay’s office, wondering what Ed had this time.

Upstairs, I found Ed at my door with Oleg, the IT prodigy. “What’s going on?”

Ed nodded toward my office door instead of answering.
