The door opened, and Cindy came over to whisper in my ear. “Ed Baird has something he needs to talk to you about.”
“Later,” I told her.
“It can’t wait.”
I spun my pen on the tabletop and stood. “Excuse me for a moment.”
Cartwright nodded with a smirk.
Once outside, I closed the door behind me and motioned for Ed to join me in my office.
He closed the door behind him.
“What is it that can’t wait?” I demanded.
“The SEC is downstairs with a warrant, andthatwon’t wait.”
The words completely surprised me. “A warrant? For what?”
“Jennifer’s office and computer.” He hesitated. “And your computer.”

Jennifer
I hadn’t heardwhat Cindy had whispered, but this was not the meeting to pretend to be called out of.
The other side was quiet and, oddly, smiling at the delay.
Dennis rejoined us. “Syd and Jennifer, there’s something that requires your attention.”
I got up and followed Syd.
Cartwright’s next line came before I reached the door. “After the SEC charges you two, I think the shareholders might rethink supporting the current management.”
The SEC charges who with what?I wondered as I closed the door and faced Ed. It was our first face to face in a long time.
“What’s going on?” Syd demanded.
Ed took a breath. “You need to go downstairs, sir. The SEC is here with a warrant.”
“Is this a joke?”
“No, sir. And Miss Hanley, you need to stay here with me until they come up.”
Syd took off for the elevator, muttering under his breath.
Ed whispered, “You should have talked to me before it got to this.”
I led him away from Cindy’s desk. “Got to what?”
“The SEC is here to seize your computer and the contents of your office.”
My jaw dropped.Why would the SEC be interested in me?
The next few minutes were a jumble in my mind as agents of the government came upstairs with Syd and we watched them take Dennis’s computer before moving on to my office. The goons boxed up everything in there. They only left me my purse and cell phone.
Syd didn’t allow me to say anything or ask any questions.
