I hadn’t told her anything last night.

She’d been busy studying for a test, and if I’d started, we would have been up half the night. If that had affected her test, I would have been the cause of another disaster.

She joined me on the couch. “Let’s hear it.”

“First, how was the test?”

“Hard. Good thing I spent all last night studying. Eloise told me she didn’t ’cuz she thought she had it down cold. Bad move.”

Hearing that made me extra glad I’d held off.

“So what’s got you into the hard stuff?” she asked.

I sniffed. “Dennis. I went to see him.”

She waited silently for more.

I stared at the little liquid left in my tumbler. It didn’t hold any answers. “I told him what I did.”

She gasped and moved closer. “And it didn’t go well, huh?”

“He told me to get out of his house.”

She sighed. “You sort of knew that would happen.”

“I thought it would be easier. I thought as we got closer, what I did before would be less important.”

She put her arm around me. “So what happens now? Do you have to leave the company?”

She nicely didn’t remind me that she’d warned me I couldn’t have it both ways.

I gulped down the last of the bourbon. “He won’t let me leave yet. He said I need to be around the people I hurt.”

“Huh?”

“The other people that work at the company.”

“Oh.”

“I hadn’t thought about how it would affect them. But at lunch...” I sniffled. “…I overheard someone saying he couldn’t buy the house he wanted to because our stock was down. I never thought…” I didn’t finish the sentence.

Ramona leaned forward to pour more bourbon into the glass, and then she took a sip. “That sucks.”

I couldn’t hold the tears back. “I really fucked up.”

She handed me the glass.

I gulped some more down. It didn’t alleviate the pain. “What do I do?”

“You finish the glass, and another if you want. Then you find a movie to take your mind off it, go to sleep, and in the morning you get back up and deal with life. One foot in front of the other. That’s all any of us can do.”

I nodded and sipped the drink. “He was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

She held me. “Do you love him?”

I nodded. “So much it hurts.”

“Then talk to him. Try to work it out.”
